More Cool Features, Voice Recording, Sub Pack, Real World Use
update four

While playing around with the EQ and presents I found a neat little feature. Its a fade in function, so when you pause a song, it doesnt suddenly blast right back the volume you left it at. Instead it fades in to the currently set volume over a time duration that you set ( 1 sec, 2 sec, a minute, etc. ) very neat.

there a start up movie every time you turn the thing on. you can also put your own start up movie. iAudiophile.net has all the directions available. only big thing to note that this isnt a simple process and if you want to do it, your going to need a non streaming video version of that movie.

i thought that this subpack wasn't going to be anything annoying, but it is. i dont understand why cown decided to go with it. it has the power port for charging, usb for computer to x5l file transfers, line in and out. they could have easily had all these on the player it self. like on the top of the player there an charge indicator that tells you that its charging, pretty unless. take that out and put the headphone jack there, and also have it the headphone jack can double as a line out, therefore switching through a setting in the player. under where the headphone jack is now there is a USB OTG, i dont see why this player needs two usb ports, but have that usb otg port double as the usb port that can also be used for computer to player file transfers (i haven't gotten around to using the usb otg yet, so it may be already be able to do that). that just put the power port where the connector is now for the sub pack and that just leaves the line in, im guessing that the current location of the headphone jack (right side on the top corner) should be sufficent. there no sub pack, even if this thing would be a little bit bigger its worth it.

also good to add the sub pack easily gets disconnected from the player. i was warping the earbuds around the player once, and then just like that the thing is disconnected.

i did two voice recordings monday one for my english class, and another for my compuer class. keep in mind that im not too experienced with recording for this part of the review. the player lets you to set bitrate for recording and it also tells you while recording how much space is left on the player. it also has a EQ preset for the voice recordings.

however i couldnt get a good recording. for the first attempt i was in the back of class with the player in a open pocket of my back pack and with the mic facing out. recording at 128 kbs mp3. so if your a pro, judge for yourself.

better results for the computer class one, not as just good as i expected tho. except i was right in front of the professor, and the player was in my hand. so if your a pro, judge for yourself.

ill edit in the recordings later on, after they are done uploading.

[Edit] heres the second class recording: http://media.putfile.com/VOC003

i also took it out to the university (i would of have done so at work, or chilling with firends, but the player woulf have little use there). not much to say here except the joystick is very useful for navigating through songs while still keeping it in you pocket. if i wanted to skip the track, i can easily reach into my pocket and feel where the screen is and then know which way to move the joystick. pretty pimp. lets you keep a low profile, unless you rocking grados or something. however i suggest to make good use of the hold feature since its very easily to lean against a desk and that desk moves the joy stick around a little.

i think thats all im going to write about this thing except for a conclusion and ratings update later.

Hey, thanks for the review on the X5L. I feel more confident as I approach the day of my purchase. So what is the player in Conclusion and why or not should I buy the player. Really curious.

Hmmm

Have you tired with a external mic? I'd imagine it would be better. Don't worry if you don't have one, lol

Conclusion, and Ratings

this a very solid player (even if my nick-pickiness doesnt seem like it), but its cleary not for everyone. Also if your not good with high tech products, forget it. If they fix some things, especially design issues, I probably buy an X7L once this thing becomes old and obselete (i guessing the name for the next generation X5L here).

so thats gonna to make it tough to give it just one rating. so im going to break it down for different demographics of the market.

Entry level, and low end audiophiles This could be for you, especially of you don't to spend a fortune on portable audio equipment (headphones, amps, cables, etc.) With a ton of music codecs supported, if you prefer a non-mp3 format its most likely supported here (only codec not supported I can think of is shorten). Im definitely in this category, there is no way i allow myself to spend more money on cans than the player, this player kinda limits me to that; because of that sub-pack. If your planning to use the some line out instead of the lheadphone jack, I'm consider you a mid or high level audiophile, for ratings sake.

10 perfect score
-1 for design flaws
-0.25-0.50 on navigation (0.25 if your music is already neatly organized, or if not 0.5)
-0.50 sub-pack
__
8.25 - 8 score for this category

Mid-level and high level audiophiles If the line out is a must, be weary. The sub-pack disconnects from the player easily (line out is on the sub-pack) and there is a bass fall off issue for the line out. If you do you reseach, maybe you can find a way to fix that. But I would not recommend it to you, unless you do some more reseach.

10 perfect score
-1 for design flaws
-0.25-0.50 on navigation (0.25 if your music is already neatly organized, or if not 0.5)
-2 sub-pack
__
6.25 - 6 score for this category

Those who want a mp3 player that can play movies on the side If your not expecting perfect video quality, this could be for you. The longer battery life in the X5L is is great if you want to watch movies. If you are expecting perfect video quality, and lots of video formats available, I would suggest saving up some more money and go fo a Portable Media Player (PMP). Also take note that you probably doing a good amount of file converting.

10 perfect score
-1 for design flaws
-0.25-0.50 on navigation (0.25 if your music is already neatly organized, or if not 0.5)
-0.50 sub-pack
__
8.25 - 8 score for this category

For the technogical challenged, and iPod fans not that the two are the same but i figure the X5L would get the same score with similar reasoning for you two groups.

If your not good with technology, buyer beware. Its probably better to find something that is easier to use, like the iPod. There is small learning curve for the more technogical advanced, and a bigger one for you guys when it comes to getting the most out of this thing.

iPod fans, this is the exact opposite iPod, in my opinion. If you like that, the skip this part and find another category more suited for you. If you liked you iPod the way it is, then be weary. Tougher navigation, more involved EQ and sound FX (JetEffects in the player) comes with this player for you.

10 perfect score
-1 for design flaws
-0.25-1 on navigation (0.25 if your music is already neatly organized, or if not 1)
-0.50 sub-pack
-0.50 learning curve/oppositeness of iPod
__
7.75 - 7 score for this category

Those who are seeking recording capablities Mmm you might want to pass just like the mid and high level audiophiles because of the sub-pack. If you a serious taper of live concert or something similiar, then go take a look at something else cause this aint going to cut it for you; since your probably going to be using the line in. But if you just want to record your professor's lectures, mmm maybe it would be worthwhile, go check out the other categories, and see whats right for you.

10 perfect score
-1 for design flaws
-0.25-0.50 on navigation (0.25 if your music is already neatly organized, or if not 0.5)
-4 sub-pack
__
4.25 - 4 score for this category

This should go into the locked archives of portable audio reviews

Has anybody purchased the iAudio X5L 20 GB from amazon.com?

Notice there are 2 versions that amazon.com is selling. They have the iAudio X5 20GB from seller: JetAudio, and the iAudio X5L from seller: Cowon. WEIRD! Anybody purchase the iAudio X5L from amazon.com?

I am looking into making a purchase for this player, but Amazon is not carrying my iAudio X5L 30 GB version yet.

Thanks!

I will chime in on this thread since I just got my x5l 30gb in the mail today, and no point making two threads. Lots of people are picking these up/ considering them, and we should refer them to this thread. Lots of great info!

anyways onto my first impressions:

originally I had bought a creative zen touch 40gb, simply cause I needed a lot of space to store as many albums as I could. Well I decided for 100 dollars more I could compromise and lose 10gb, gain a few hours of playback time and a nice color screen. Fast forward to opening the box. The player is packed ok. For the price I would really expect a nicer box, like the ipods, but I can't complain. One thing I noticed and immediately smiled at, they include screen protectors! altho only two, they are very useful and most people end up having to buy these online. / mini tip, to put on a screen protector professionally, and not have all those hideous bumps/ air bubbles, simple wet the protector with rubbing alcohol. Then lay it flat on the screen, and use a paper towel to press as much alcohol out as possible. Leave it to dry for a few hours and you will have a perfect screen protector/

It did take a while to charge, I don't know exactly how long, but less than 3.5 hours for the full charge.

/New owners, charge the battery up to full before using it! you will screw up the battery if you charge it for 40 mins, and unplug it to play with it/interupting the charge cycle. The first few charges be sure to empty the battery completely before plugging it back in. This ensures your battery will mantain its max capacity and last longer, it's known as cycling and applies to all rechargables, even nimh./ I will time the next charge cycle but that may be a few days away

as for the player, its actually very light, considering there is a 30gb drive and extended battery in there. I'm amazed at it frankly, if you are worried about it being more cumbersome than the normal x5, get real! this thing is small and light, if you can't carry this in your pocket perhaps you should consider leaving your keys/wallet at home too. Build quality is very good, the aluminum case is a big plus, and the annodizing is very well done. With this said I did not like the feel of the navi joystick. Its small, and has a pretty good edge to it, so it is not very comfy navigating. People with large hands look out. It takes some getting used to and definately isnt for everyone. Also like it was already mentioned, the rubber protector for the bottom peripheral jack is not connected to the player, I see this getting lost very quickly. I know it's nit picking but finding another one of these is hard!!

so first time turning it on, plugging in ksc 75's, and WOW the intro movie/ad blew me away. The player sounded huge, lots and lots of bass, especially with the koss ksc's. I looked at the eq settings, and turns out of course the bass is set to full, fx are set to full to impress/wow. This sounds ok on the stock buds but with real headphones they are a bit too much. Initial navigation was very fustrating, due to not RTFM. because of the basic controller, you have to memorize patterns and directions to navigate. So if you don't like to read manuals then don't expect to know how to work the player. I actually think the player is too simplified and that a larger comfier navi-joystick on the center of the player would work much better. It's basic and sleek, but a little too much so, and takes a little time to get from menu to menu.

the color screen is quite nice but definately shows the weakness of the gpu, videos are acceptable but you will see artifacts/ choppiness if you look for it. All in all very watchable though and better than I expected. I was planning on watching anime on this but I shall see if the subtitles are readable after I try it. Sound quality is quite good, but I won't go into that much as I believe all mp3 players sound about the same.

the usb/line inout/ charge jack adaptor. this piece really brings the player down. They may have done this to cut costs/ simplify design, but I am not impressed. While it's usable, it's not very stable and you could not, IMO, use portably without risking damaging the player. Reason being it sticks out quite far, and the idiot who designed it placed small tabs/bumps on the piece, surrounding where it plugs into the player. Now this would be great if there were slots/indents in the player to accept these and click/lock together, but there are none! so the adaptor cannot meet flush with the player.

inital impressions summary:

pros: a lot of player for the price, good looking color screen and excellent enclosure material. light and small. Player is assembled with normal philips screws, so you can actually disassemble the unit yourself if need be. Handy recording button on player so you don't have to fumble through menu's for it. included ear buds look nice, and sound ok. There is virtually no bass on them so the eq is tuned for them, but the mids are listenable and highs are ok. they don't hurt my ears like many other stock buds. plugging it into the computer is very easy and drag and drop is a huge huge convienence. The transfer speed is very good, and i uploaded an entire cd (670mb) in about a minute. Included software is intuitive and useful.

cons: screen is a little small, navigation joystick takes getting used to and hurts the finger at first. adaptor is annoying. headphone jack is on the side of the player?! why not at the top? this sits kinda weird and wont work well with tight pants. no included remote (even a cheapie with no screen would have been nice). the volume is impossible to adjust while scrolling through songs, and this is very annoying, since the volume control is also the navigation control. The controls themself are a semi complicated and you do need to read the manual. not as userfriendly as an ipod wheel.

more to come this weekend, when I have more time to sit down with the player, and the computer!
