Similar to HD600 but slightly less bass-prominent?

The K601 really pops into mind as a potential mid-point between the K701 and HD600, although not totally understanding what you didn't like about the K701, you may find the tonality of the 601 to be off as well.

Beyers may be a good option - DT880 maybe?

To the OP: The Cayin HA-1A has selectable impedance taps via the rotary knob on the rear. The lower impedance settings have lower output impedance than the high impedance settings, which will tighten the bass. Have you tried the HD600 on the low impedance settings?

In fact I have. It does tighten the bass, but it holds everything back in the sound spectrum too. It sounds constricted at 6-32 ohm as opposed to the bloomy and expanded sound of the 121-300 ohm setting. I haven't listened to the two middle settings extensively, but my quick impression was that they sounded more similar to the highest setting.

By the way, I appreciate the answers everyone. Please, keep it coming!
