Well a computer has some disadvantages up front that make them less than ideal as a source. I wouldn't say you can't make them a good source but other dedicated sources will usually sound better "out of the box". Using analog outputs only I think there are probably limits on the quality that can be achieved from a computer simply because there is so much noise in the system.
That said, using the computer as just a 100% digital transport for a nice external DAC (which has it's own much cleaner power for the analog conversion) does give good results since it avoids all the internal noise of the computer.
