I would describe the E500 as airy. It's like there is a big cloud of air around my head and I can pinpoint practically every single nuance in the song, if that makes sense. It's like the sound is coming from 1 metre away from my head in some songs.
(Can we have a Shure E500 smilie please?)
The E500s tight, deep bass adds an incredible layer to everything. It just sounds fuller. To me, the E500 is very similar sounding to an E4c but with more apparent bass that I can hear on every song and more nuances are apparent.
I spent 2 hours last night listening to music and I was just amazed to hear little minute details that I never heard before. A drum beat on the E4c is a "thump" but on the E500 it is a "THUMPPPP".
There is so much energy going on in your head when you listen to these.
I would say if you are looking to upgrade, get the Shure E4c at least, it does a very very good job.
So all in all,
E2c = not sure, never listened to these
E3c = E4c - bass - upper frequencies - less detail
E4c = E500 - bass - less detail + bigger soundstage
E500 = E4c + bass + more detail + biggest soundstage
