Shure E3 or Ety 6i

I recall Headroom saying they're both great canalphones, but the ER-6i being the better for the price. It's my understanding that Shures tend to be more "fun" and Etys more "hi-fi". I can agree on the Etys, I have some ER-6s (not ER-6i but they're very similar) and they detail is excellent. No ER-4s perhaps, but still excellent.

The c series is meant for the consumer. But other than the different color, the headphones are identical.

Just got ER6i's yesterday, and they are simply amazing to me, like baby ER4P/S, with a close performance gap- the price more than makes up for it though. My new favorites that topped my Grados!

Based on my ER-4Ps, I'd say go with Etymotic.

I don't know about the Shure's being more fun, but my Ety's are plenty fun. They even have a good bass response. They sound really good right out of the iPod, too.

The only music I found to be uninvolving were the albums that were recorded and mixed poorly. So I guess the Ety's can be a little unforgiving.

Most definitely. I don't find a lack of bass either as many have said. I mean, maybe with a flat EQ, I have my EQ set for higher bass and a little treble. But it's only coming out of an Audigy 2, unamped at the moment. I tend to have to EQ everything or it sounds kind of bad.

if you can find the shures cheaper then the ety's I would get the shures. The shures resopond amazingly well to equlization and they are extremely comfortable. The shures are really good for rock stuff and decent for jazz(but that is when the eq comes in). The bass is nice and really clean and is not that as depdant on seal as the er4's are. The bass is nice tight. These headphones are really musical. I found my shures for cheaper then the etys.

I think the etys are better for a sitting down and analytically listening to music. I think the shures are a better candadite for on the go rockin out and such. They both have their purposes.

If you can audition one or both, that would be best. I have not heard the Shures but would like to. My boss has the e3c and likes them. I love my ER6is! I am practically an Ety evangelist I like them so much. For my tastes, these moderately priced phones compete very well with phone costing 4x as much (this is just for my preferences as I am sure others would disagree).

One thing that I like about the Shures is that they have a little cord wrap thingy that facilitates running the cords over the ears to reduce microphonics. I always run the cords for my Etys over my ears as it makes a very noticeable difference when moving about.

Opinions vary. IMO, the Etys are very in your face. Everything is right up front, well balanced with hyper treble energy yet rolled off at the very top end (this is ideal to my tastes). Bass is well articulated but lacks the slam you can achieve with full sized phones. Shures supposedly provide more bass and are often described as darker then Etys. I would agree with calling Etys bright and or analytic.

My Etys were my first step into good/decent phones and I have liked them since day 1. I can't wait to upgrade to the ER4Ps.

Good luck with your purchase.

I prefer shure E3, because of their fuller sound. I found both the ER4, and ER6i, to sound just too thin compered to the shures; (and yes, I did have a good seal, especially with the ER4, which I found gave me the best seal out of them all). The E3 I find to sound fuller, with the best mids out of the three, however their highs are a weakness. The ER6i, on the other hand have an also clear though thin bass (regardless of Equalization; bass boost made the bass louder though still thin). The mids I thought were very good though in my opinion not as good as shures lush mids, and the highs excellent and better than E3s (unless EQ the E3). The ER4 I think has the same thin bass of the ER6i, but noticeably more textured, with mids that in my opinion still not beat E3s mids, though beat 6is mids, and the best highs out of the 3, though yet like the ER6i it has a thin sounding midrange, and low range.
