If you haven't done so, install the Shure PLAY app on your phone and see if it recognizes them when you think they're on. I think there's an option in the app to have lights appear on the headphones when they're on or when they're performing a certain function.
If all else fails, Shure is very good about quickly replacing them with new ones (not refurbs) if you send them in with the proper procedure and purchase receipt. The Returns procedure is on their website.
