No it doesn't.  It means Elevated Standard.  I wish I had my old awesome Sony Style from the early 90s.  I'd look through them way too much. heh

Sony ES means Sony Elevated Sound. The phrase appears in the earliest product catalogs for the line.

NO

Sony Elevated Sound.

IT IS

 Elevated standard

Not Elevated Standard, but what I bought when Sony 75 and 87ES DAT Recorders were recognized as being insufficient for my recording needs. The unit  is a Sony PCM-7010F. It's one of two that I still use, connected to an RM-D7200 dual remote operating as an automatic editor. The recorders integrate well with  my laptop for all recording needs I have today.

Very nice!

This of course is pro audio equipment, which is in another league. Fun fact the DVP-S9000ES was the first AV Sony ES equipment, assuming you don't consider an ES receiver that could switch video inputs in that category. That said, the first DVD player by Sony period matched my STR-DA90ESG.

I'm still using my DVP-S9000ES for SACD playback now that I've replaced the laser. I would like to experience multi channel SACD so I'm thinking about getting an OPPO which has multi channel RCA outs, which I can hook up to my Sony TA-P9000ES preamp.

My usual Yamaha amp broke so back to my "back up" Sony TA-444ESII which has its own issues running speakers HOWEVER the headphone output (through some fancy expensive cable made in the NL) into Philips X2's is epic with no issues... it has really been a blessing in disguise.

You know when you hear stuff in a high quality recording you have never heard before such as footsteps in the Depeche Mode recording studio....this has it in spades!

That’s very nice!

Here’s my BDP-X1100ES I just got and installed I’m not sure why Head-Fi is flipping it upside down though!

It's strange that not even Sony seem to know what ES stands for. I used to blame people for referring to as Esprit to their Sony ES as there were only a few true Esprits in the 80s, but I recently saw some Sony catalogues from mid 90s with Sony clearly stating Esprit near their ES gear. This again got me confused, but I suppose it was a marketing move.
In some older catalogues from the 80s I also noticed "Extremely high Standard" mentioned near ES components.

There was only a few true Espirit's in the 80's. I am lucky enough to own the 3 most rare ones. The TA-N902, SE-P900, and APM 4. I also have a Sony Reference DAS-R1 dac. I had a couple Sony ES cd players but do not currently own any ES components right now. The Espirit stuff crushes the ES stuff to my ears. Really Reference level before Reference came out.

It stands for Elevated Standard, according to Sony Style mags of the day. I wish I still had one!

Hi everyone,

I currently own 3 pieces of ES equipment that I use on an everyday basis, albeit, a bit less the DVD player. And as many of you, I too am a true fan of Sony's ES line which I have been carefully collecting over the past 20 years. All 3 machines have their unique story and I have no intention of ever selling them. As far as I know, I will die sooner than these truly awesome pieces of electronic gear:

Sony SCD 777ES as my SACD and CD player (with a Vacuum State Electronics 4.5 upgrade)
Sony HAP Z1ES as my HDD audio player
Sony S9000ES as my DVD player

Throughout the years I've been carefully choosing matching components in the never-ending pursuit of "the best sound". Audio wise, I currently pair both Sony players with a Plinius amplifier (9200) and a pair of Sonus Faber speakers (Cremona Auditor M) and I couldn't be happier with the combo. The sound is full, detail pristine and with an impressive 3D sound stage. Happy days.

I share with you some pics. Cheers.

Love the pics! The SCD is pretty-much CD endgame. How did you decide the vacuum upgrade would be of benefit and worthwhile?
