Should I Go For The Karma?

But have no idea where to get it from. I've heard some of you guys mention mack warranties, viking warranties and compuplus. Does compuplus offer these warranties or are they from different vendors? I know that bestbuy and amazon have them for $199 right now, but cheaper is always better.

Let me know guys.

I got my Karma from Buy.com for $169.99 + shipping. I used the $10 off coupon for new cutomers linked below.

I know lots of people have had poor service with buy.com but I've order from them many times and they've always shipped quickly and I've had no problems. I ordered it last Friday and it came this Wednesday. I'm probably going to buy the 2 year Viking warranty for $20.

Edit: Hmm it seems like they're out of stock at buy.com now.

I know Compuplus still has the mack warranty on offer. When you buy something, on the top right hand corner it gives you a 2 or 3 year warranty option for $20 or $30. I couldn't find it doing a search, but I did find it when I put something in the online shopping cart to check out.

I would advise against it. Although I don't believe Hard drives are as fragile as they are made out to be, I still wouldn't jog with them. Whether the Karma has a player that has a more fragile hard drive than other players, you'd still be better off with a flash memory player for jogging. I just wouldn't take the chance. It probably can be done, but whether the player lasts is another story.

i would advise against it too. but not only because of the HD issue but also because of the size and weight issue. unless you put it on a very secure belt clip its not really something i would like to jog with.

you CAN jog with the karma, but i don't see why someone would buy one TO jog with. It's even got a stopwatch, which would come in handy.
I've run with mine, holding it in my hand, but I certainly wouldn't do it often. As others said - buy a karma to use, and run with it at your own risk. However, for exercise, a flash player is better.

cyclone: ha, i noticed your list is getting longer

MusicJunkie,

Not yet, but I will soon. I just bought a Karma and a Nomad Zen Xtra so I can evaluate both and see which will suit me better for jogging come this spring (I will, of course, only keep one of them). It's too freakin' cold in North Dakota here at the moment and I haven't bothered to get a gym membership yet so I haven't actually jogged with either player. But I have conducted a "shake off" between the two players. Basically what I did is (rather forcefully) shook each player up and down in my hand for five minutes (units both set on random play and playing MP3s) . A cruel thing to do, I know, but I figured if a player could take such abuse then it should be able to take the bouncing of jogging (when held in hand or on an armband, of course). At the end of two shake offs the Nomad was running fine but the Karma locked up both times and had to be restarted. These results aren't conclusive, of course, and just because the Rio couldn't hold up during the shake off doesn't mean it wouldn't be able to take the rigors of jogging. Hopefully I can find out within a few days which player hold up better once the foot hits the pavement (or the treadmill, more likely).

Both players were purchased along with two year extended warrenties and from dealers with 30 day no questions asked return policies. I would never think of jogging (or shaking) these players without such safety nets. Still, it is a gamble but most hard drive DAP owners report (here and on other forums) being able to run with them without inflicting damage. We'll see (fingers crossed). The lure of having my entire music collection at my fingertips while working out was just too powerful. I just couldn't settle for a flash player, I just coudln't.

I waited for about 8 months before picking one up. I, too, was worried about the hard drive "issue". However, having been on various user forums in different markets and gadgets for years, you quickly find that once one person posts a "problem", everyone follows. It's also normal to see some "hip" devices, such as the Ipod gain acceptance even with all their problems both past and present.

So far it is great...much better interface, for me, than the Ipod. Sound is better, as well as the cool screen. Would have liked a Chroma but latest rumour is September and I just can't handle any additional 2-16 hour flights with a wack of CD's and portable CD player...

Anyway, it's great. I wouldn't get any HD player online unless I picked it up for a steal. It's too much of a pain to return it. I paid more than I should at Bestbuy but now if I have a problem in 3 years, I take it back locally...

Great device...

Flash players are getting so cheap...why not just buy one and use that for your jogging? Why take the chance of jogging with your HD player?

I want to have my entire music collection with me and I love to listen to songs in random order. And the larger the storage space, the greater the variety of music. Besides, it's easier (and cheaper) to have only one DAP. If using a player with a hard drive doesn't work for jogging then I'll get a flash player as well.
