Hi,
Well somehow I have 20% discount across all the Ultrasone
products. Even they are willing to give me Edition 9s for a
20% discount. Is it worth getting an Edition 9 can or should
I save up for my dream Stax setup?
I am still confused, are the Ultrasones worth that much?
Please help me out so that I spend my 20% voucher wisely.
Cheers.......

I think you should save your money for something more practical. It's a lot of money to spend on just one pair of headphones! Think carefully about it... and for your protection, I think you should send me that 20% discount voucher so that you won't hurt yourself too much with it. Something like that can be a very dangerous weapon in the wrong hands, you know!

I guess you might say that I'm in the market for a pair of E9 myself and a 20% discount would almost for sure push me over the top of whatever hurdle has been holding me back all this time. The other one is the JVC DX-1000. I keep thinking that I ought to get a pair, but never do. Now the ESW9 is on my list as well, but they're not so expensive (but still seem so given what they are). Always something making me think I need yet one more pair of cans!

I would save up - it's better to take big steps in upgrading, rather than taking small baby steps - It'll save you money in the long run.

as I found out painfully.

Oh, the E9 are pretty much a big step!

How much would it cost you total for the Edition 9?
If it is a better deal than you can find them used i would buy them and sell them here or elsewhere if they don't tickle your fancy

...

But that's me, headphone and deal addict!

Well gamble on something at that price isn't a wise thing to do.
Even I am a deal addict, but not to that level.

Try out the new HFI-780 to see if you like it. This will get you very close to the UE9 and spend the rest of your money on the Stax setup. I have the ATH-ESW9 which is a great little portable headphone. I have had the 780 for about a week now and been blown away with how near the UE9 it is. Yes, the UE9 is better at least today but the 780 is burning in but it still has the sound of the UE9 and would be a good test to see if you would like it before jumping into that price range.

some people really like the Ed.9; others love stax. some like dynamic; others electrostatic. there is no clear decision here. it all depends on who you ask.
