Shanling Streamers - EM5 & NEW EA5 Plus

@Shanling my 'Source' floating button is doing nothing on latest firmware and I see this reviewer has same issue

BTW : What does SRC in top bar ?

As noted on our website under all the recent firmware updates:

"To open Input Switching Menu, hold on the “Source” button for 2 seconds."

SRC enables fixed resampling, if for example you want to run all your music as DSD64.

You can check this for more details on the menu items: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d1vE-r6MmIeN2SkFwXCL0Uvx-STXJV-B/view?usp=share_link

thank you, that's what I needed to know

hint : it might be good to include help/manual in the menu of device itself like digital camera manufacturers are doing

Hi,

Yes, as I said in my "review" I was surprised to see absolutely no documentation coming with this device.
To be honest, I don not even know if that is legal in Europe...

Anyways, it is quite simple to figure out.

There are 2 floating balls buttons.

One is labelled "Source".
You have to press it down for 2 seconds to go directly to the source input selection.
There you can choose, i.e. if you want to use the device as a DAC or as a streamer for local files...

The second one has no label but is probably much more important.
It allows you to go back to previous screen.
Which is good to know when you are in the device settings... and are puzzled as how to go back

And indeed the "SRC" in the drop down menu is quite puzzling.
But if you hit it, you will notice that it takes you to the selection of what to do when listening to DSD files.
WHich is a little confusing... instead of source maybe a label saying "DSD" would be more appropriate.

But of course if those would have been the only drawbacks, I would still have the EA5 in my posession :)

regards.

OK but from UI point of view it shouldn't be hard to make a label after one press that will tell it is needed to press it for longer

with SRC it is puzzling indeed

manual says "When active, all audio files will be resampled to set sampling rate or DSD."

so if I use TOS input then I can force upsampling to 768000 ? because on LCD it says PCM 48
so I am not sure if I can verify it is upsampled or not without any additional means

Hi,

Yesd, UI of Shanling could be improved. But Shanling decided to go it's own way and does not care about listening to customer reactions.
Probably because they hire a part time intern developper for their software

From what I understand, that only applies if you play DSD files.
But can't tell for sure as I have litterally ZERO DSD files for one ; and do not have the device anymore to check :)

So why am I saying so ? Because I have other devices (DAP) that have the same "setting". And I have not noticed any change in displayed sampling rate when it's activated. And even if sound is sent to an external DAC, taht does not change anything.

But I may be wrong.

Regards.

Each EM5/EA5 comes with standard manual in the box. As your unit was some demo unit from dealer, it's possible that packaging was not complete.

SRC - Sample Rate Conversion. It affects all the files, you can have it resampled to higher PCM or DSD. It's not just for DSD files.

OK but from UI point of view it shouldn't be hard to make a label after one press that will tell it is needed to press it for longer

On the display it indicates what is input signal, so it will keep showing 44.1/48, etc no matter if you have SRC enabled or not.
There is currently no notification if the SRC is enabled for the digital inputs.

The only thing that has changed from previous listening sessions is that I switched it to line-out mode and turned it off in it. If there is anyone who uses the line-out mode on 1.5.1 or who wants to test the theory on their player, then switch it to line-out mode and turn it off, try to turn it on later?

I unplugged the player for the whole night, but when I just tried to turn it on, I already noticed artifacts on the screen in the form of vertical stripes, I shot the video during the second turn on in the morning, artifacts are already visible on it, as if from screen burnout.

Yesterday I thought that the androyd had flown out of the device’s memory, so it couldn’t start, but today I already understand that the problem is most likely in the motherboard or chips.

I'm going to take it back to the store today =(
Good afternoon everyone! My Shanling em-5 was recognized by the seller's service center as unrepairable, after which they returned the money to me and I bought a new device. I have been using the new device for the 8th day already, the software version 1.41 was immediately on board, today it was updated to the damned 1.51, which killed my previous player and immediately the installation failed, some terrible menu came out. After that it froze like my previous player on the startup logo, spinning non-stop until a forced hard reboot. I expect that from day to day this device will also die, at that time its death began the same way ... Shanglin - life is short ...
IMG_0899.jpg

In update 1.51, the volume in the pre-out mode is limited to the high gain mode and does not switch to any other mode, although it says that it is in turbo mode. But when you switch to line-out mode, the volume increases by one step of gain.

Is anyone else facing this problem? Downloaded the software from the official site.

Wait a moment, so your device is stuck in the Android recovery menu or is it working fine right now? Bit confused from your post.

Fixed gain setting for pre-out mode was done by project manager, to keep the device within standards for pre-out voltages.

Hi,

Good to know that the Android version used is obviously 7.1.1
We're now at Android 13.
Google releases a new version every year.
So this makes it a 5/6 years old system to power a brand new machine.
No wonder it will not work properly with some software and works only with the dedicated Shanling app... which is probably developed under Android 7 too.

My advice : return the product (again).
Get a refund.
Use the money to switch to something else.
The EA5/EM5 will probably never work as they should or at least as you want them to.

Or wait for a Shanling EM11... but given the price increase between EA5 and EA7, those will probably cost the price a Naim Uniti Nova...
I, for sure, will NEVER consider spending 2100€ on a "beta" device like the Shanling EA7.

Regards.

Introducing EA5 Plus

Originally released in 2021, EA5 was an All-in-One home streamer to sit alongside our EM5. Simplifying the headphone output in exchange for adding an integrated amplifier for use with passive speakers. Unfortunately, due to a lack of amplifier parts, the EA5 was discontinued in 2022.

But now it’s time to welcome our EA5 Plus, an upgraded version with a new and more powerful speaker amplifier.

While the original EA5 offered 2x 50W @ 4 Ohm, the new EA5 Plus pushes it up to 2x 100W @ 4 Ohm, thanks to its class-D speaker amplifier 100AS2 from Danish ICEpower. EA5 Plus can be easily matched with more demanding speakers and the overall sound quality took a step up.

Rest of the Streamer is identical to the original EA5, combining our closed Android platform with streaming services, AKM AK4493EQ DAC, 6.35mm Headphone output and separated power supply design. Making for an ideal all-in-one solution for a wide range of Hi-Fi setups.

Available now at Shanling International distributors.

MSRP 980 USD

Hi,

As far as I have seen almost everyone is saying that sound of the EA5/EM5 is really good.
But I think I am not the only one complaining about software and some hardware aspects.

As the add proudly states that, except the new power amplification, the rest is unchanged, I assume that most, if not all, the software problems listed here are still there, just to name a few : no support for gapless playback ; closed Android (with a funny argument about "Sound quality") ; crippled in-house app...

And as far as hardware is concerned, I don't think that a new power amplifier is really a game changer. Jumping to a more recent SoC than a SD 43x series or going to a AK4497 would have made me consider it again.

I will write the same again : the idea is superb ; the sound is sublime... But the Software experience turns a dream into a nightmare (OK, a little exagerated, but still)...

So I will wait for a MAJOR software release and will then reconsider an EA5/EM5. If I have not switched to something else like the Fiio R7 (but that one does not have native UPnP renderer support !).

Regards.

I'm instrested of this device despite the flaws. I've a question about the DIGITAL outputs; are those fixed line level or does the front panel volume wheel control the output level? I've read the documentation and quite a chunck of the thread but could not find the info.

I will be selling my EM5

you have pre-amp and line-out

with preamp you can control volume, with lineout it is fixed

Thanks for the information. I just want to be extra sure that the DIGITAL outputs have the adjustable output as I've already gone through two devices that didn't support it (Audiolab M-DAC+, Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 3rd Gen) and M-DAC+ was sold to me especially caliming it had this feature.

I could be interested of the EM5 if the price is right. I'm from EU, i.e. it needs to be the 220v version.
