Do you rate it? I had a chance to sit in front of a SCD-T200 today and it sounded pretty good to me. However I make a point of auditioning at home as I believe meet-style opinions to be relatively worthless, and unlike the G08 the nearest dealer who could get me a Shanling can't offer me a trial. It's either straight buy or no, and if I don't like it sell for a loss. Yay or nay? I've given up my on-off plans to mod the SCD-XA333ES, so the Shanling would be a replacement for the 333.

The XA777ES is also up for replacement, but I'm not sure what with. I also spent quite a while in front of a dCS Verdi La Scala + Elgar Plus + Verona ($41,460.64) combination today. I'm looking very, very, very hard at my wallet.

I have got to listen to the sacd Shanling for long auditions twice. It was not stock but had the level 1 plus mods from underwoodhifi.com At the time it was my favorite sacd player and excellent redbook. However......if you pick up one of the Sony 999ES players for 600-750 used or new and have it modified by Dan Wright (ultimate truth tube mods) it will totally blow the Shanling out of the water. This is an amazing CDP! Redbook that surpasses my cary and a friends Audio research CD3 MKII. (SMOOTHER, MORE RELAXED, WITH BETTER AND STRONGER BASS, AND MORE DETAIL) sacd that is soooo beautiful. this is the best buy in digital IMO. Nothing in the price range comes close. You can find a new player for about 750.00 and the mods top the price out at about 2400.00, or a hair less. The Shanling with mods was over $4K new. I've got to hear this player side by side with the sacdmods 555ES, and the CDP's mentioned above and it is a winner. The quality of workmanship on installing the tubes is very good . it is a two box unit when hes done.
I'm sorry for getting so off of topic here but this player is really worth checking out.

Do a search on http://www.ecoustics.com for the ModWright, LLC SONY SCD-999ES. You'll be amazed by what the reviewer had to say about it!

Welly, could you find the review and post a direct link to it? I'm having no luck with the search function at ecoustics. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure he means this one. The reviewer, Robert H. Levi, really likes this player. He starts with this:

There's a diy dac where in one listening session, the two guys there felt that the dac matched the 999es platinum signature truth unit but that's another story, I guess.

The player in this review is the same player, with the same mods, I have been listening to. It has the silver cable connecting the power supply, and uses the TungSol 5686 tubes. I wish I had a picture of how nice the plate on top of the player looks where he (Dan) has the tubes coming up through the machine. The first weekend the bass was a little soft but by the second week.....look out. (more powerful than either the Cary, sacdmods 555, Audio Research, or MF trivista DAC) The 999ES has more bass and is much more detailed bass that goes very deep. The only drawbacks might be that it doesnt have balanced outputs and you will need a TV to set it up the first time.
