@Shanling what is the M8's 4.4 line out voltage?

Shanling did say this on page 156:

Edit: I also recall seeing someone post that they had asked Shanling this same question and the answer was in the high 4.x volts... My memory says 4.9V but using those keywords on Google/head fi yields nothing, FWIW.

Oh great thanks. I will be using 4.4 -> xlr so 4.9V-5V will be great.

I noticed an issue when using the M8 as USB DAC with my MacBook Pro 16".
When the MBP is not connected to a power source and running on battery, plugging in the M8 makes the M8 act as a charging source for the MBP instead of acting as a USB DAC even when I changed it to either storage/DAC mode on the M8 settings...

If it's no trouble I'd like to hear your (and anyone else's) impressions of the M8 -> amp.

I've used the M8 line out (3.5mm SE) to an amp that's said to be neutral and to me the sound is a bit too warm... to the point that I didn't like it. There's impact and dynamics, but I can't say I actually enjoy the sound overall.

I don't think the amp is fully burned in yet so I reserve judgement, but I'm wondering if this is a function of the M8 not having a 'true' line out and if that's coloring the sound? Might be off base here, all this stuff is new to me.

So yeah, impressions using the M8 line out are welcome.

Edit: the M8 and the amp referenced are the only such devices I currently own so I have nothing else to compare them to, so looking for feedback.

Well, it is not true LO (5v off the DAC)...it's 5v off the amp...so you are double amping. Possible the LO output is already colored warm...

Funny issue. I don't think I saw any such report from the Apple silicon Macs.

I'm trying for the first time M8 to Ray Samuels Intruder amp using 4.4mm and I'm not finding it to be warm at all. Hiby pro sounds way warmer.

It is entirely possible that I have no clue what I'm talking about.

I have a 4.4mm interconnect coming in a day or two so I'll see if balanced sounds different than SE.

Thank you for your impressions.

I haven't been by this thread in a while but I thought I'd pop in to say that after nearly a year I'm still totally enamoured with the sound of the M8 to the point I can't even begin to imagine switching to another player <3
I have the m8 and ibasso dx300 max and I find them to be a complimentary pair. I may try and get the m9 when it comes out if it keeps the m8 sound

Some early Tuesday morning listening on the M8 paired with the Trailii to lift the start of the day. :)

M8 and Geek Wold GK10 is splendid. 2 piezoelectric drivers inside for ultra-high frequency can be tamed by M8 quite nicely. My addicted sounding recently. ♥️

New update for Apple Music is a vast improvement -- not on SQ, but stability. Fewer dropouts, glitches. Sound of lossless on M8 through Focal Utopias is excellent.

EDIT: Never mind. Same glitches, different tracks. :slight_frown:
