How is this one versus Fiio M9 in terms of sound quality and usability is general? I’m deciding between them. As I’m upgrading from the Fiio X1 1st gen both options will be a big step forward.

Why didn't you just read some backward pages of this thread? Fiio M9 is using the same DACs of the Shanling M3s. I would say the M9 is not at the same level of Shanling M5s except you are a "die hard" of some android streaming features...

How many is "some"? I've read 20 last pages and I haven't seen any comparison - that's why I'm asking. What about wheel on M5s? I remember there were complains about it on M3s.

I prefer the M5s over the M9 the M9 had better treble or treble detail but everything else is better or rounded with the M5s.
Now im also using eq on M5s the margin gets wider.

The wheel on the M5s is much better than m3 and m2 more recessed and solid

Please make your cases for M5s to the old spec you had for the M3s. Had to cut mine to get it to fit a balanced cable for the HD650.

My fingers are tingling when i see the 2.5mm TRRS output connections and i already finished saving some coins for a new device and a bottle of sparkling pre new year wine. My headphone cables for my in-ears and over-ears are 2.5mm and im currently using an 3.5 to 2.5 adapter. I am very happy with the small M0. Do you think it will be an ear-opening experience to upgrade to the M5s? Driving power alone doesnt matter because my beloved phones are very easy to drive.

Thanks for the fast reply ... hmm... black color or titan/ gold... it always takes "forever" for me to make a decision . My small M0 is titan. Maybe i should invest into 2 more ears and buy both colors.

Well just the balanced amp section is going to give you way more headroom and layering and more refined sound than the M0. Even on SE it’s going to sound more natural, less restrained and open. You can only do so much in that tiny space. Should be worlds apart, even M2s has a more refined and natural sound than M0.

Looking nice. I had the titanium grey Shanling M3s and wanted a change. I could also see having matching DAPs.

Sounds like there's a Jotunhiem inside this DAP . Seriously this amp stage running balanced drives the HD650 very well on low gain. The HD650 pairs phenomenally with the M5s from the balanced output.

That's the Pioneer XDP 300r isn't it? That's a good DAP too. Did you sell it?
