Shanling M0 - Smallest Hi-Res Portable Player - New Firmware V3.6

I see it has USB C. Will it allow charging the M0 while it is playing out to a USB DAC (with a suitable adaptor of course)? This would make a very neat desktop solution if it can charge and play (USB out) at the same time.

Also, does the library function have sort by "Album Artist"? I notice that the Onkyo/Pioneer players have this very useful feature now. Most players only have "Album" and "Track Artist" (which they call "Artist") and these are not very useful if you have a mixture of albums and compilations as the Artist list gets overloaded to the point of being useless.

Not sure if these infographics were posted, but:

And some photos. Looks great and curious to see the UI in action.

I'm betting the Hiby R3 Kickstarter campaign is going to be affected mightily by how much information we get on the M0 before the campaign closes.

While I know the high-end folks have plenty of questions regarding ohms and flutter and wow, I have a more user interface-oriented question: will there be a speed control for podcasts and audiobooks? I assume there's a resume feature for those files already, since seeking in a 90-minute cut is tedious. :)

I loved this post. "Wow and flutter". I have not heard those terms in ages. Reminds me of the days when my portable music was on cassette and how hard it was to find a good cassette player that did not warble when running.

Since I have a toy problem I will probably purchase both the R3 and the M0. I just pre-ordered the R3 on the first day of the kickstarter while the price is lower. By the way HIBy extended the initial offer from a limited number of units (like 200) to being available all day.

But I agree that most buyers will want one or the other. Since they are head-fi types, the ones who are willing to consider a higher end machine will in fact purchase the higher end machine. For me; I use ultra-portables like this for exercise. Well, also in the car.

This unit looks like it beats two of my favorites; the Shanling M1 and my ipod nano. The square nano with a built in clip; kind of looks like the M0.

I recently bought an original stock Sansa Clip Zip, since Sansa has decided to downgrade all their newer models to be so much less than what their older line set as a standard. But, I'm pretty sure when this one dies, I'm going to want something more modern. I already had the M1 on my watch list. I also jumped on the R3 KS, but I'm willing to drop the support if the M0 looks like a better match for my uses.

I'm using a rockbox Sansa Clip+ for the gym and for biking (VE Monk Plus on the bike, and only uphill). Some day it'll succumb to all the dirt and grime, and I'll be screwed. I got a nice deal on a Shanling M1 which I'm using for travelling. It's a really nice portable player, but it's quite a lot bigger than the Clip, and I believe that the M1 wouldn't take the same abuse, it's just too nice looking.

I have high hopes for the M0. With a good clip it could be a real winner!

I will probably get the M0.
I’m 90% sure now, just waiting for some reviews, some good feedbacks on the UI.

To be honest, I think neither the M0 or the R3 will be the perfect device I want.
The M0 is cheaper so I will be able to change sooner. In the meantime I will probably look less like an audio nerd at work with the M0.

But hey @Shanling next time I want The perfect device!
- Seamless interaction with smartphone
- Clean Bluetooth reception for both iOS and Android (AAC & AptxHD)
- TRRS in line control & mic -> Taking Bluetooth call with the device and then resume playback after
- Siri and Google Assistant stuff...

I really think this kind of device will interest more people than the audio nerd we are here.
(Maybe because smartphone are not adapted to wired audio anymore)

It just needs to provide a sleek experience.

I'm pushing on our software team to have it added.

@Shanling , could you confirm whether or not the M0 will have a line output from the 3.5mm connection, please?

it will not have dedicated "line out" setting. If you want to use it with additional amp, just set it on 100% and be done with it.

Audiobooks not yet implemented.

Also, everybody keeps mentioning R3, yet they are completely different devices for different type of users. If you want Wifi and Tidal, R3 is great. If you want something that is almost 3x smaller, has half more battery life, has two-way LDAC connection and at half the price, M0 is for you.
