+1 on the DT250! Try to go for the 250 Ohm version though, as it sounds more controlled, accurate and transparent. A Magni, Vali or O2 should drive it.

Replacement connectors for the single-sided cable are available, but they are quite a bit larger than the original, and lead to cable microphonics issues. You may need to consider cannibalizing the stock cable...

SRH840. Used it ranges $100-175, usually $150. SRH940 velours fit.
 
Sound is warm, accessible, slow / elegant, smooth, and relatively clear.
 
You will probably want to mod the headband with the inner foam of HD600 or HD650 for comfort.
