If one is using a DAC with a headphone amp, should the sample rate in Windows be set to a fixed rate or should i be changing it manually depending on the source i'm playing?

Kind of a hassle to change it for different files with different samples rates each time.. :frowning2:

Are the any negative aspects of setting the DAC for example to 192Khz and playing music that is lower than 192Khz?

I'm using a CA DacMagic 100 with a Musical Fidelity HPA1 with Windows 7.

Possibly. It could cause aliasing.

I would download a 20-20kHz sine sweep with a 44.1kHz sample rate from somewhere(like here: http://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_sinesweep20-20k.php). If all you can hear is the pure sine sweep you should be good to go. If there are aliasing problems the most obvious thing will be a ringing in the bass part. Remember to download the file and not play it from the browser to ensure that it's not your browsers fault if there are any problems.

I'm using the original DAC Magic with my PC and I have my sound card set to output 96k 24 files at all times and haven't heard any problems yet

That's a good advise. There is another page with sweep tones but at higher sample rates, that might help too:

Just did the tone test with the DAC set to highest sample rate. Didn't hear any degradation in the sine waves. I guess there's not any problem to set and forget the sample rate to 192Khz. Thanks for the links for the test tones guys. Appreciate it
