Yes, that's a good way of putting it. When I said "long "e"', most people probably thought I meant that it was like "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". What I meant was that it was pronounced like the "e" in "teen" rather than the "e" in "ten".

There is an old searchable thread with interesting pronounciation guides for lots of audio terms. (featuring, for example, im-PEED-ance).
