Sennheiser HDVD800 Headphone Amplifier
Oct 19, 2021 at 9:09 AM Post #3,002 of 3,016
Thread bump on this . So sorry for a repeat question.

I’m looking at a new ( or even 2nd hand ) dac to replace to onboard hdvd800 dac. My max budget is £1000 ,but would prefer spending less than £500 if possible.

What dacs would be a big bump in SQ over the onboard? Or am in better off selling the headphone amp?

I do have a drop thx 789 as backup , that rarely used. I know it’s ALOT cheaper than the sennheiser l but tech wise it is newer, so I’m wondering if I selling the sennheiser and than add a dac to the 789 that would be a better option?

Edit… I should add I’ve got hd650 with a balanced cable, and also hd800 with standard cable.

Any opinions or suggestions welcomed.

Thanks

how this amp in 2022? I would be pairing this with non-Sennheiser phones.

I've been looking for technical details of the amp and hardly anything out there even on Sennheiser's site.

- DAC chip?
- max power for XXohm impedance chart

Thank you.

im still using this headphone and love it. I did try looking for my manual, but can’t seem to find it 😕 I’m using a rega rp6 turntable and also have a audiolab 6000cdt using the dac from the headphone amp . I’m not sure it’s worth getting one at full asking price these days as you could probably get a better separate amp / dac combo. But a good 2nd hand bargain might be worth it.

How much if you don’t mind me asking ?

There is a pre-owned one available on eBay atm from a hi-fi dealer for £899 , but there is a £75 discount available. They are also taking offers. Might be worth a look.
Much cheaper than that in local (non-£) currency. If I have to guess it's around £600 posted in local currency.

Depending on condition , I’d say that’s fairly good. The amp was obviously designed for the 800 series headphones, so they will drive any headphone. As for if you can get a better dac…..after the amount of time it’s been out …probably. But I’m happy with it. I did consider splashing out on a chord dac… But not sure I can justify a £1000 outlay.

It has an output impedance of 43 so best for higher impedance hps. The dac chip was never considered anything overly special. i think it is an akm chip

It was a TI chip. Depending price, I would not get this unless u can get one for under $650.

Hello,
I had got a second hand HDVD 800.

Unfortunately its RCA jack lost its own ground sleeves on both of left and right channel.

The normal HDVD 800 has these RCA jacks.

My HDVD800 has lost RCA sleeves as below.

This RCA jack has 6 pins for PCB soldering.

It has Tip, Shunt and Sleeve pins.

I would like to replace this RCA jack with new one.

Can you please let me know its part name or where can I buy it from?

Thank you very much.

Picked up the HDVD800 recently for a second station....Have it hooked up with the balanced inputs from a Cambridge CXN, so far appears to be a fine clean sounding solid state amp, bringing out the best of Sennheisers own and with 2 x XLR 4 pin great for doing direct headphone comparisons on the fly.
Have yet to use the DAC but it might come in handy someday.......

For anyone dropping in, believe I've confirmed the HDVD800's Achilles heel. Finally got around to pulling out my AKG K872 for a comparison with the other resident closed backs the HD820 and Focal Elegia, both of which the HDVD800 power very well. And while the K872 at 36ohm 112db sensitivity are very similar on paper to the Focal at 35ohm and 105db the HDVD800 had a difficult time powering the AKG, even when getting levels matched, performnce was very underwhelming, flat, 2 dimensional and little bass and running out of volume?????
Switching the AKG to the Bryston BHA1 told an entirely different story, bass, dynamics, sound stage were returned, and vastly improved, now being similar to the HD820....
I've read the HDVD800 might have problems with some low impedance phones and basically dismissed that observation after using the Focal but the proof is obviously in the pudding.
Should note that having the HD820 (balanced) and K872 (single ended) hooked up simultaneously to the Bryston both phones produced similar volume and results but on the HDVD800 not so.

BTW HDVD is fabolous
It is pretty good..but as you have noted hit and miss with some or low impedance phones.
Oddly or maybe not but the Sennheiser HD630VB, at "23 Ohms" 114dB, perform great with the HDVD800.
BHA-1 has much lower output impedance.
Over the years Bryston has always been very good with all my headphones especially the AKGs starting with from the K240DF (600 Ohms), K501, K701, K712 and the K812 and K872.... the amp does matter. :)
