Sennheiser HD820

I would caution against a blind bus on this one though given the price, a test to make sure it seals is a necessity in my opinion.
Definitely, I held off pulling the trigger until I could actually try them for fit and sound and being actually able to compare them directy to a few others like the Stellia, Dan Clarke and Meze Liric made my decision so much easier.

I have the 660S's and am feeling a huge need to go up level.. HD-8xx, haven't chosen yet.. 👍
As I mentioned previously, excluding sound stage, I'm finding the new HD660S2 more similar tonally to these HD820 than to the HD800S. And IMHO the HD660S2 for me is fair upgrade to the HD660S with regards to bass, body, treble, stage width, height depth and layering.
The HD820 appear to work with most genres, Kraftwerk were lots of fun, classical is very good.... although earlier when listening to Yusef Lateff "Before Dawn" album from 1957, I found the HD660S2 more preferable and worked better with the more intimate sound stage, being a little thicker and full sounding.

Market correction at its finest … this, and the hd700 were definitely priced inadequately at release based on how the martlet reacted.
……
Or before their time…..now 5k is acceptable as the norm. lol
Jury still out on their newest release…
Sign of the times… still cheaper than groceries though. :triportsad:

I have not yet managed to dare to venture beyond hd8x0 type of pricing. The stuff at 5k, I may just never get on my head … ignorance is wallet bliss!

Tried the 5k stuff, came back to 2-3k as its just not worth it.

IEMs are proving to be better value at a higher range or just go Electrostat at that point as I did.

I saw the 820's offered for right around $1k this last holiday season. Not open box, nor used. I chose the Audeze LCD 2C, as I had recently bought the Focal Elegia's closed back.. next time, I'm going to jump on it.. so 😎 looking!!
I saw that deal, but already had the 820. It was a killer deal for a new set. No brainer. I paid $1400 for a used one, but don't regret it whatsoever. It's worth more for the joy it's provided me.

Honestly I find it all a bit silly and still not too sure how we got there here....... still remember wrestling with spending over $200 for my AKGs when I first joined Head-fi 20 yeas ago...but it's everything these days, housing, food, building supplies.......
What was the saying back then when welcoming new members..."Welcome to Head-fi, sorry about your wallet". lol

Sweet deal, probaly to move stock when they switched manufacturing from Germany to Ireland and changed the packaging....believe the HDVD600 head-amp was blown out for around $450 at one point.

the Focal Elegia's closed back.
Same for the Elegia...less than 60% off the original MSRP...sold mine but just might pick up a second pair.

Anyway...the HD820 are an interesting and quite unique pair of headphones IMHO..no regrets...so far. :sunglasses:
