Sennheiser HD820

If the pads were thicker (which seems like that would be hard to do!) then maybe they’d seal better. Very frustrating.
Hmm, I really don't have that problem. I can press and loosen cups, and I can't hear any difference.
Perhaps the difference is so small that I don't even want to bother if there is any.
Unlike with IEMs, for example, if you don't have a good seal with certain IEMs, the difference in sound, especially the bass, is huuuuge.

Perhaps something else is going on.

Cheers!

Still can’t get these to “fit” right. If I press them slightly against my head then they sound fantastic but if I don’t I lose a ton of mids and bass, leaving them sounding thin and tinny. I have the same issue with mine, and have to do a rubber band mod to keep them sealed tight. I like how they sound in general but I do wish they clamped better. I wanted to try bending the steel band a bit to increase the clamp but i'm worried about the plastic risers breaking during the process.

So you have the rubber band on while listening?

yep, i hardly notice it. If you use too strong of a band though it will lift the set off your head hahaha. Found that out the hard way through trial and error. I settled on using two pretty generic and thin bands together. They flex a bit more so i don't feel them, and they still have enough pull to help seal the cups. I tried a thick band and that one would just pull up on my ears like crazy, it was pretty comical.

Thanks for the response. I’ll give that a try today.

Many headphones react in a similar fashion, try upping the volume slightly, should bring up the bass and mids. Pushing on the HD820 does bring up the bass but destroys the out of head soundstage, their raison d’être 😎

This mornings chill.

Reviewing this after years, I believe this is one of the worst products that Sennheiser made.
I wouldn't say worst, lol, but in the pursuit of trying to replicate the unique sound stage and tonal presentation of HD800 series in a closed back design they weren't quite successful, AKG IMHO did a much better job on the K872.
But here's the thing, once on gets more acquainted with the HD820, and depending of course on how you wish your music recreated, the HD820 can become quite an interesting, engaging and very rewarding headphone listen.
So I wouldn't say "one of the worst" but one of the more unique offerings. :sunglasses:

I’d like to add my thoughts on the HD820 here, a HP that is very dear to my heart and ears.
  • They don’t work equally well for everything and, here I agree with a number of reviews/posts which said this as well, they work especially well with a muscular amp and/or some tubes.
  • The pads, indeed, were a liability. I’m using Dekoni Elite Hybrid, which greatly improved the seal, comfort, and to a smaller extent also the overall sound (because of the better seal).
  • By far, the biggest, most impactful change, though, was switching to the WyWires Platinum, which added a weighty, organic, textured quality to the base that had me stop in my tracks. One of these rare AHA moments in this hobby of ours, when it’s not a little this or that or better or worse but a different dimension altogether.
  • All this considering that the reason I bought the HD820 in the first place was that they were the ONLY ones at the time, that I could accept as “comfortable” to wear while giving me a good enough sound, even in their original state.
So definitely not one to dismiss as fast and easily as done by so many…

Can anyone recommend a short thin (4ft-5ft) cable with 4.4mm termination for 820 that doesn’t change sound signature from original stock cable?
For custom no nonsense...

ArticCables

or Hart Cables which are fairly well received.

I've a FogCty terminated in a 4 pin XLR but find it a bit too stiff.

Even cheaper ones available but the HD800 connectors can be problematic if skimped on.

As long as there's a good connection the wire shouldn't make any perceivable difference to the original sound so comes down to mostly eye candy.

I really like artic cables. What do you recommend hybrid? From my understanding silver makes the tonality brighter and cooper warmer. Thanks.
