was wondering if it's possible to change the "Dynamic headphone capsule HD 800" to HD 800S when that part comes out, and call that an upgrade.

Definitely possible, but if you notice the price, you'll be paying at least $250-$300 PER driver, and no guarantee they are matched. No, Sennheiser won't do the upgrade for you.

Agree why keep an inferior phone in stock, replace it.

Who says it will become inferior? It was assumed that the HD600 became inferior and obsolete when the HD650 came out. After the initial buzz and hype-train eventually derailed, many preferred the balance and sonics of the 600.

Indeed... can't wait for some comparison reviews to start flowing in!

Here they are:

"Sounds like the original 800 but slightly smoother (duller) with more bass presence (the old law of displacement)"

"Duller" - Yikes, that does not sound very appealing.

Great points you make here.   I'm one of the ones who prefers (by a wide margin) the 600 to the 650.   Newer is not always better.

It could be that those who like the HD650 might prefer the HD800S...and those who like the HD600 might chose the original HD800.

its always great to have options, currently owning the hd800, hd650 and a modded pair of of hd600. Each of them definitely have their place, though the hd650 is used the most. I also feel its the easiest to recommend to my friend, due to its affordability and being more suitable to modern (bassy) music.

By marketing and main source media, some of us have been program to believe new is always better, especially when it comes to mainstream consumable items like iPhone's oops.. I meant mobile Phones.  Also planned obsolescence adds to this way of thinking as well. Planned obsolescence is where a product is programmed or designed to fail after a certain period of time.

Anyhow back on topic, I also prefer the HD650 over any other Sennheiser HP, I'm hoping the HD800S will change that but I have my doubts.

Glad that the price isn't too high.  Will certainly keep my beat up pair of the HD800 for a long time.  I probably will not upgrade unless the HD800s is substantially better...which I highly doubt that.

Actually I think its more of a sidestep, catering to people like me that found the sound signature of the original HD800 just not to their liking, but having an affection for their perfection. Which would also explain why the original HD800 is still there and costs abut the same as the HD800S if you get the balanced cable for it. I don't think its a logical upgrade path for an owner of the original HD800.
