both are 800S models, old has more closed resonator, the new "open" resonator sounds much better at least to my ears,
the open has S/N 30xxx

I was reading about the massdrop hd-800 with new dual resonator.I suppose the new 800S wich picture i took is the new dual resonator. In the picture you see that i removed the dustcover, at the center of the dustcover is a thin film about 1 cm in radius with a hole in center and is straight above the "hole" resonator.I think this makes it dual resonator. The sound is a mixture of original hd-800 and 800S.
Soundstage on par with original 800.The new is in every way better than both previous versions.Huge amount of microdynamics everything is more organized and balanced .Hope i'm right here with technical details because i don't own anymore previous versions so i can't check

Their structure is not bulletproof, someone disassemble it and found out maybe.
This may be why my 800S sounds different than my Anniversary edition :)! Should I try to find out ? I don’t want to though, just as long as it sound differently to me, that is enough. I now have a couple years on with my 800S. It came with XLR and not 4.4 cables

Yeah I feel quite upset when they replaced default balance to 4.4... I'm not 4.4 fans when comes to desktop

Might be a little sacrilegious but I EQ'd with Roon's Parametric EQ using this guide... with -4db to Headroom. And most of the problems I've been hearing with them have gone away and I do not think I've lost any detail either. Roon's DSP is pretty powerful and they have a workaround even for MQA. Let me know if anyone else finds this useful!

Important question, please 🙋‍♂️. Is the HD820 as comfortable, and as loose fitting as the HD800? This especially for people wearing eyeglasses... the HD800S is the only comfortable headphone for me, so I am wondering if the 820 would be the same comfort-wise. Thanks for sharing ...

Me. Owned LCD4, Susvara, AB 1266 Phi TC and came back to HD800S. DAC is 780D and amp 430HAD, both Moon by Simaudio.

Also tried Meze Empyrean, Sony’s flagship, ZMF Verite, HEDDphone, and a few other flagships, on my gear. None were worth switching for.
Our of curiosity, what do you feel is the differences between the 780D and the built in 430HAD DAC?

(New happy owner of the 430had, few weeks in and my goodness, what a piece)

It’s UHmazing isn’t it?! Very rare to come across anything else that sounds as good. The 780D is a bit more open sounding and more articulate but if I was to go back in time, I’d save myself the money, frankly. The DAC in the 430 is BEAUTIFUL and is in no need of an upgrade.

I’ll try and make the 780D the heart of a two channel speaker system if I can, but that’s even more money I probably don’t need to spend!!

Are you saying your second picture is a "closed resonator" 800s, or a standard 800? I've pulled apart many drivers and the thin adhesive resonator is simply an 800s. There aren't variances in the inner diameter...

Yeah, I think he has them backwards. The old HD800's had the open ring in the middle and the HD800S's has the resonator. I haven't seen what the dual resonators look like on the Drop version of the HD8XX
