Is there evidence for this? Measurements etc? There were similar rumors about the HD 800 to have different tunings over the years but nothing I read or experienced made it true. I listened to a 6xxx S/N, my 13xxx and high 40k and found no differences with the same pads.

Actually it is documented that Sennheiser changed drivers before without noticing customers with the HD650 , everybody know the black screen driver vs the new silver screen but thats really old news , now i only speak from my experience with the HD800S, it could be batch variation though i know that's not a serous issue with Sennheiser because i never seen anybody complaints and because i owned two HD6XX low and high serial and both sounded the same to me.

Yeah, I know about the 6XX variants. It's true there. However it was never true for the HD 800 OG at least.
Naturally i'm curious of course if it's true for the 800S. Would love to listen to an early and new model. Don't know anyone with a pair though.

I have a friend in the Z privet chat confirm that old and new OG HD800 sound different but i never bought the 800 so i dont know but i trust his judgment.

Actually you are not following the scene thats all ,, it is will known that in the used market HD800 lower serial is more wanted from some buyers

Would you happen to have an idea what S/N would be considered "lower"?
I'm asking because my 'like new' HD800 originally purchased in 2015 and used one time, then put away which I received a couple of weeks ago are S/N 338xx so I'm just curious.

So nonsensical. This is such a tired discussion.

Go back to the Chang days. Plenty of HD800's have measured consistent. Rather than anecdotal tomfoolery.

tbh i dont know ,for me i would prefer latest serials because its newer,
in previous post i am just stating my observation that some seek lower serials.

I have #0047x purchased in May 2009, I would consider that lower.

Was just curious if my unit was considered a low S/N, that's all.
One thing's for sure, my 800 sounds amazing, regardless!

I've been profiling headphones in commercial recording studios with Sonarworks for years. Open back HPs aren't usable in most tracking situations so we typically use Beyer DT 770 Pro or Sennheiser HD 280 Pro that have been calibrated.

Many artists, particularly string players love to come into the control room and hear playback on HPs (in addition to room corrected near field and mid field studio monitors) because of the intimacy they provide with their own playing. They can catch subtle string / fret noise, intonation issues in their own playing, for example.

We switch to open back HPs at this point because as a whole they provide better sound. The HD800 were an immediate favorite and I've bought several pair over the years, so early production up to the latest production. We run 4 profile recordings to allow for any subtle variation in mic movement and then average them to create to profile we correct from.

We've use a calibrated Earthworks mic as well as Sonarworks own individually calibrated mic. We track these initial profiles at 96K in ProTools which is 32 bit internally. Mic preamp is a GML 2032. D/A converter is a Crane Song Solaris. A reference in pro studios and mastering.

We have seen no differences between early production HD800 and the latest in our profiling. Granted our sample set has been small, but 3 were early production and 4 were recent.

The HD800s has quickly become my preference and I've bought a second pair for personal listening at home. Both pair profiled exactly the same.
