Hello guys.

I know that it is hard to answer if the Sennheiser HD650 headphones will be replaced soon with a new model, but what do you guys think? I'm thinking about buying these headphones and I see that the 650 model is a few years old and Amazon is selling them at $399 instead of $640 which is the full price. Could it be because there is a new model on the way?

And, I doubt amazon ever sold them for $640.. They've probably always been close to $400.

Well, I thought those were not a direct replacement because they cost 3x the price of the 650. Are you saying that hd800 is a replacement and 650 is gone out of production?

I don't think the HD650 is going anywhere.

And I don't think they have been going down in price either..

They're not out of production. They'll likely remain there as a great solution for someone who isn't interested in spending over $1K for a pair of cans.

It's a normal for a new model to shoot high, almost everything, well, maybe not rice, after sometime, the price will go down.

IIRC, the Sennheiser rep said that no "baby" HD-800 was coming. Given the amount of time the HD-600 has been on the market, I don't see the HD-650 going anywhere any time soon. Further, the R&D, tooling, etc. for the HD-650 should be fully amortized now. Sennheiser will likely kick back and let the profits accumulate, as corporations are wont to do.

The only Sennheiser rumor I've caught lately is that they're not done with electrostats. If Sennheiser cooks up something on par with the HD-800, I'd immediately preorder.

I still like speculation on a toned down version within a couple of years. $800 is a very large price gap. I'm not old enough or well-read enough to know, but did the Baby Orpheus follow the HE90?

However, some Sennheiser stats are very intriguing... I'll hold off on other pairs until they come out, I think.

Look at the HD600. That hasn't been discontinued, yet the HD650 and HD800 were released.
