Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Simple question, is there is headphone higher up the chain that people conclusively agree has a better timbre & tonality than the HD6xx/650/600? I've been through all my headphones again recently and none of them compete with the HD6XX in this area, not even the HD800S, what headphone do you guys recommend if you want a higher end version of the HD6XX/650/600?
Looking at your electronics - which are very good - if you, lowrider007, want a ‘higher end version of the HD6XX/650/600’, use a higher output impedance h/p/a with 6XX / 650 /600. Examples include: Beyerdynamic A2, Beyerdynamic A20 (both SS), Woo Audio WA2, Woo Audio WA3 (both VT OTL).

I'm not sure there is one, to be honest.
I think so too in my limited experience. Of all the headphones I own, which I have in my siggy for others to see, plus the ones I used to have that are not there, nothing has touched the sound of the HD 6XX. Only the HD 58X Jubilee can approach that tonality with a funner signature, but they're not as detailed even if they sound brighter.

The fact that we can't just easily rattle off a few headphones really is quite a testament to how good the HD6XX/600/650 is, unbelievable.

I'm used to be a longtime fans of HD6x0 ( owned 6-7 different HD6x0 in the past ). I'm now very comfortable with ZMF's lineup and never looks back

Interesting, ZMF are the only headphones I've really been tempted with right now, in particular the Atrium open.

Finally got round to giving the HD6XX a decent listen - and I'm sold. To me it has the benefits of the HD600 with a touch of the HD660 (S and S2) thrown in and a lovely harmonisation with both the iFi Go Bar Gold and the various Fiio amps I have. I'm finding them very relaxing but still giving me the detail/timbre of what I listen to.

I'll keep the HD600 as I'm never going to part with what is still clearly a classic. But I'll sell the HD660S2's that I purchased (yet again - that's 3 pairs I've bought and sold in 9 month's - they are 'nice, 'decent' even, but there is something not quite gelling for me listening to them).

All my own opinion of course, others will steer a different course, but the HD6XX just give me exactly what I want to hear. And I guess thats what we are all seeking.

Hmm, I thought the HD600 and the 6xx was so similar, that they would sound the same? But I guess that's not the case?

It is similar in many ways but adds a slight something IMO. Hard to describe but, to me, it is a HD600 + a very slight increase in bass presence and a smidgen or two of more detail.
And it's not a matter of worn pads vs new ones?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you are incorrect, I'm quite new to Sennheiser myself, so I'm just trying to figure out how their line up is arranged :)

No, both have new original pads and both have been used for roughly the same amount of hours (give or take an hour or two). Both are immaculate and untouched.

I'm also hearing a wider soundstage with the HD6XX. Not a huge difference but it is there.

Both headphones are the Made in Ireland variety as well.

Line up wise I've owned the HD600 (many times), the HD660S (once), the HD660S2 (three times!) and I've listened to a friends HD650 (but the pads were worn to be fair). I've also owned the HD58X but did not enjoy them. Now I've settled on the HD6XX and these seem to hit the spot for me.

Ranking wise (based on my listening experience over the last year);

HD6XX
HD600
HD660S2
HD660S
HD650 (must have been the worn pads)
HD58X

But as much as these are my own listening experiences I'm sure others will have these in a much different order.

I'm wondering about the HD6XX/HD600 differences also, I actually wouldn't mind a touch of extra brightness and slightly less bass, reading about the differences online it's hard to get a concrete answer, some people say that they are the same and it's just down to pad age, others variances in the driver's.

Thank you for saving me some money - I own a 6XX and 600, and had been eyeing a 660s2...

The 6XX is the same as the 650, not the 600, so the 600 will sound a bit different. They all share the Sennheiser house sound, so it's not gonna be crazy, but it is noticeable.

I was late to the 600's having now owned them for less than a year. In my opinion, I find the difference between the 600 and 6xx to be noticeable immediately with obvious differences. Bigger sound stage, better bass, better timbre, just clearly a big difference between the two. You don't need to be listening critically to hear the differences, at least I don't. I love the 600 and enjoy the 6xx. YMMV

Just my 2 cents..

Leo
