Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

What do you guys think about some people preferring the new 560s to the 6xx? Did any of you who love the 6xx/650 get the chance to compare them without any bias?
The enormous hypetrain makes me a bit suspicious as I'm one of the people who absolutely loathed the 599 (bloated bass, piercing highs, overall cheap sound) and can barely believe they give the 600 series a run for their money.

Bought my girlfriend the 58x last year which I really liked in comparison to the regular 500 series and planned to jump on the 6xx train myself this Black Friday, but the 560s reviews made me unsure of the decision and I sadly have no opportunity at the moment to compare these headphones with each other.

@thekenta I have the 600/650/660S and tried the 560S for a few days. It's a good headphone for the price, but I sent it back. It's an obvious downgrade from the 6-series with a soundstage advantage that in no way makes up for the quality lost. I thought it could be something to add to the collection, but no, it just feels cheaper and you lose from that natural quality of the 6-series sound.

I would recommend the 600 over the 650, by the way.

I concur.
I have HD660s and I am reviewing the HD560s.
It is exactly how Sennheiser is advertising it and way inferior to the 660s as it is to be expected.
And I don't get what it is all that hype about and who is exactly promoting it.
Sennheiser surely not.

The HD560S is like the Sennheiser for DT880 fans:wink:
If you dig a bit of zing in the upper frequencies added to an otherwise neutralish presentation..you’re going to love it.
No wonder that PMS guy is hyping this headphone as he seems immune or slightly deaf to the Beyerdynamic zing. Folks who are used to and love the original 6 series should definitely approach with care.

Yay, I finally got an adapter which make it possible to use my custom cable for sony MDR-Z1R to be used with my Senn 6xx. If any of you guys interested, I got it from Haldane audio store at aliexpress

edit: Apparently they make a new listing for for this adapter already.

About the bass on the HD6xx/650: If new, when the clamp is still very tight, you don't really notice the sub-bass roll-off that much, it's quite extended.

However after a few years of use, when the clamp is loosened, the sub-bass roll-off is a lot more pronounced. Same with mid-bass punch, it gets quite weak when having a loose seal.

It makes sense why Sennheiser put the clamp so high on the HD6x0 series, since they rely on seal for the bass extension and punch (especially extension)

it has been a short while since i last posted on this thread, mentioning that i bought a new HD650 for sentimental reasons. admittedly, after burning it, it has been sitting on its headphone stand whilst my other headphones had all the playtime.

just for kicks, decided to hook up the HD650 to my tube amp, plopped in all my best tubes, and whilst the amp was warming up, input an oratory1990 EQ curve into Roon.

one thing is for sure, the HD650 can output really glorious sound. reminds me of the day i first listened to it some 16 years ago. it was my first high end headphone, which i saved up for ages to purchase. it is such an amazing all rounder headphone, pleasant highs, luscious mids, awesome low end. far from demanding and not too finicky (unlike some of my other headphones).

I find that the earpads make a significant difference. Last year when I changed mine (not the first time), I noticed the old ones were really lacking in structural integrity (compared to the new ones) when squeezed between thumb and finger, even though they “looked” OK. I’m referring to Senn pads.

Just ordered a Darkvoice 336SE from Drop to go with my HD6xx. Drop has them for $200 instead of $290 on Amazon.

I have a tube amp amd love the sound through speakers. Hopefully the DV is a good one. Seems that they may have QC issues.

What quality is being lost ? Material and or sound ? I was thinking of selling and or trading one of my hd6xx for one, mainly for the larger sound stage. Do you think clarity has taken a hit compared to the 6 series ?

To my ears you lose the natural expression of the 600/650 over the 560 because the new kid on the block jacks up the energy in the upper frequencies. If anything it sounds clearer, just not in a natural way imho.
Then again if you tend to like ‘detail’ being pushed forward or an aggressive edge to the presentation if you will, the 560 may just be what you’re looking for:)

I have the HD 560 S and used to own the HD 600, HD 650, and HD 660 S. The only advantage it has for me is comfort, while soundstaging is superior on a lower-end system over the Hd 6xx series. I thought a well driven HD 6xx series has better soundstaging, always felt the 3 blob effect problem of the HD 6xx series was exaggerated and was only really an issue on some systems.

I may return the HD 560 S. I like it, but it just doesn’t quite measure up to my other headphones whereas the HD 6xx series at least had something to offer when compared to my other headphones. It’s better than the other Hd 5xx headphones but it doesn’t reach the Hd 6xx series. The HD 6xx series are without question superior to the HD 560 S in terms of fidelity. The DT 880 is also better as despite its zing as the Beyers fidelity is competitive with the HD 6xx series. Considering the prices of the HD 6XX and the DT 880 the HD 560 S is arguably not that great of a value either.
