Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

They sound nothing like the HD 650.

Beauty is in the ears of the beholder I guess. LOL
I still love mine but they definitely take the back seat to my HD 650s
Then again when I'm listening to flacs on my Sansa Clip+ it's amazing how hard
the Momentums can rock on so little power.

The Oppo PM-3 is another closed headphone candidate.

Not that the PM-3 is anything like the HD650, but the slight roll off in the upper registers and the well behaved midrange would appeal to those who prefer a non strident signature. Bass has great presence if emphasis in this region is your thing.

For a closed headphone, the PM-3 isolates well and does a decent job at containing sound leakage. While imaging is decent and the overall presentation coherent, the trade off for this sound isolation is a constricted soundstage compared to open cans. The PM-3 is a fun headphone though - due mainly to the emphasised, but clean bass.

Build quality is really nice. Design is slick and it does feel like a premium headphone, even compared to others in higher price brackets. It's convenient for those on the go. My iOS devices drove it to decent levels and I didn't feel compelled to seek a portable amp/dac when just streaming Spotify.

Agreed. I like the Momentums for what they are, but the DT150(with certain tracks and equipment) are actually is superior to the 650s in many areas. They out 650 the 650 at times! (Though they are the essence of a utilitarian looking can)

But on the go with a DAP or a phone the Momentums are great.

Can you find a PM-3 for $200?

The HD650's are $200 now?

What kind of closed back are you guys using that sound similar to the hd650?  If there was only one thing I wouldn't mind different, it is a little bit more speed. Same price range as the hd650.

EDIT:  Doesn't need to be portable, but needs pretty good to great isolation.

^ This was the initial question.

Wondering if it would even be worth my time to get this for around $200 on ebay, considering I only have a Creative Soundblaster Z

More than one question going down, things move fast here, ya gotta keep up.

My post was clearly about a closed headphone alternative to the HD650. Reading comprehension is a requisite.

I actually agree, the DT 150 surpasses the HD 650's in terms of clarity, imaging, and vocal realism/body/depth, only heard a few headphones better in terms of vocals. They are a little uneven in their response compared to the HD 650 though and I find the HD 650 more consistent among gear and tracks, I find the HD 650 can squeeze more bass impact than the DT 150 on the right system too. The HD 650's bass on the Lyr 2 was a real treat.

Excuse me for being a newbie when it comes to the 650s, but I'm having trouble sifting through the pages to find my answers.

Can someone inform me of the revisions made to the 650s over time and the differences in both sound and presentation (such as box/driver color and such)?

Excuse me for being a newbie when it comes to the 650s, but I'm having trouble sifting through the pages to find my answers.

Can someone inform me of the revisions made to the 650s over time and the differences in both sound and presentation (such as box/driver color and such)?

Original 650's: sold until 2007 or so, came in corrugated silver box. Sound warm/dark.
Updated 650's: sold from 2007 or so until now, came in corrugated silver box and updated black box around mid 2014. Sound less dark, minor treble differences (perhaps more clarity overall).

All 650's: sound different from new as pads wear. Pads can be attributed to different sound presentations, and personally I find this to make a substantial difference between any 650's I've heard (all the post 2007 versions).

How to tell the original vs updated? Look at the side... The baffel near the driver is darker on the originals, and looks white on the updated ones.

Thanks for the recommendations on closed back alternatives to the hd650 guys.

I'm going to get the chance to hear a DT150 soon myself.  Right now it is between the DT150, Oppo PM-3 or ZMF Classic (Master revision).

It doesn't have to be exactly like the hd650, in fact I would prefer more speed and a deeper bass extension, but to keep the fantastic mids and smooth treble of the hd650.  The three aforementioned headphones seem to all do just that from some impressions I've read.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those three. And Zach is a great guy if you go in that direction!

Just couldn't live with the DT150, that cheesy black plastic housing and adjuster. Look like RadioShack bargain shelf, fuggly.
