I find K702s bass very, very good, specially in the midbass. I've never used EQ, but I will try to roll off the treble a bit and focus on the bass, that's a great idea (why didn't I think of that before?)

The K701s (and I assume the 2s) are all about bass texture for me--you're not going to get that thudding, visceral bass that so many people crave, but if you EQ the 701s just right and listen to the right kind of music, the bass is truly fantastic. I find the K701's bass reproduction to be particularly engaging on a lot of jazz albums, and even some jazz rap albums, like The Low End Theory.

I just recently got a pair of HD-650's. I had an old pair of HD-600's from a friend, and the grills were dented. They were the older model, but I've always enjoyed them. In fact, through my journey of cans (I've gone all the way from SR-60's to LCD-2, HD-800s and tried every brand in between), I always found myself coming back to the HD-600s At least in my opinion, they do everything just right. They might not have the highs of some other headphones, but overall they do everything just what I want. I also have pretty finicky/sensitive ears, so a lot different sound signatures can irritate my them. But not the HD-6xx series.

So here we are, back to the HD-6xx's again. I recently decided to get a new pair considering that the 600's were pretty beat up over the years (previous owner doesn't know how to take care of things). I have to say, I really love the HD-650's sound. I was kind of worried based on all the comments I've read over the years about the 600 vs 650.

But honestly, I think they sound pretty damn similar, with the exception that the 650's sound warmer and a bit more lush. I actually understand more now why people prefer one over the other (now that I have both of them side by side to compare). But I'm really happy with my purchase, and think I prefer the HD-650s. I'll need to listen more before I make such judgments though. But given how sensitive my ears are, I do prefer the more laid back/warm silky sound (which some call veiled/muddy lol). Eh, such is subjectivity and listening preference.

Either way, I plan on keeping both. If I ever feel I need something a bit more livelier, I can just switch the 600 and if I feel I want more laid back/lush sound then I'll go back to the 650s. I also look forward to upscaling my set up around the 650. Do you guys have any suggestions for amps that are particularly good with the 650? EDIT: I'll make sure to use the search function and do research too. Just wanted to ask the current 650 owners what they think.

I still think the Graham Slee Solo pairs really well with the 650's.

In fact I'm listening to that combo now :)

I'm listening through a Dynalo/Sigma22. An underrated and forgotten amp that drives them marvelously. Actually it is designed for low impedance phones but getting it to clip with the HD650 is practically impossible.

The 650's also pair up well with my Denon AVR-4311 in Pure Direct mode. The receiver shuts off everything except the 2 channels. Even the lights are disabled to remove all interference. The Denon has an AKM DAC (the same brand as the Fostex HP-P1) and the sound is terrific. I have been listening to some SACD's via my Denon DVD-5900 and the sound is wonderful. It is a nice change from all the AIFF's from the MacMini via the DAcMagic+.

I already have the Fiio E17 which is why I asked about that particular model amp.  However, is there an amp below $300 that would be a significant improvement over the E17 for the HD650's.   Or another pair of can's in the price range of the HD650's that would be dramatically better?

Thanks
Mike

In that case, I would suggest getting the HD650 first, determine if you like the way it sounds, then look into dedicated headphone amps.  Though, the E17 is an excellent product on its own, so you might not feel the need to upgrade anyway.

I recently joined the club. Paired 650s with speedballed crack. These cans make it easy to get lost in the music.

Hey, just wondering what sort of EQ you guys would recommend for these cans. I'd like something that really kicks the sub bass for my rap music. If it helps, my amping/ DAC is in my sig. Also Im not fussy about something external or a software, this will be a desktop set up.
