While back I sold off my entire collection using the 650's solely. Yesterday I bought a set of he-500's & a lcd 2.2 pre fazor. Will be comparing them this weekend.

Just received a pair of hd650 from an online auction I won. Pretty bad condition with paint chips and banged up grill on one side. I´ll refurbish them and custom paint them. They work flawlessly though and for $32 US I think I got quite a steal :)

Anything near the 650's price?  Again, warm tonality of 650, but "fast and clear."

The only 2 that I have are DIY headphones, Ypsilon S2 or the Nhoord Red V2 drivers, both will cost you about $300-400 in parts, these two are what replaced my HD600, HD650, K7XX and HE400i from my listening rotation.  Can actually be cheaper since they sound great from computer headphone jack or phone, no need for DAC/amp.  For other these have replaced HD600, K7XX, Ether/EtherC, Alpha Prime, LCD2 and HD700.

Some say a Nighhawk might also be an option.

There is one S2 build for sale on ebay, $375 + shipping (I don't care for the rod block and headband of the build tbh, tried one set but had to modify it, which included some welding)

If not you can EQ a HE400i or HE400S to get them warmer sounding, might be cheapest option

That was a terrific buy as long as the drivers are ok and sound good. Just a suggestion... the hd650 is very 'modular' in build so that it would be easy to get new yokes, grills and pads giving you in effect, an almost new headphone. The strap over the head could easily be covered with a Beyer head strap which has poppers and makes the headphone even more comfortable for me.

Price would still come out pretty low. (Compared to a new one anyway)

I always worry about coating plastic with paint since it could come off again at a later date with heat expansion etc. making it even worse!!

Agree about painting but I think it also has to do with the type of paint used and the prep work one does before painting.

@stilleh, I would suggest changing the ear pads unless they are new or fairly new

The pads are crap so I'll definitely change them and I have ordered the headband with poppers too...

My HD650 with HM5 velour pads and VE balanced cable+adapter to 2.5mm balanced to be used with the Opus #1 and Aune M1s in the hotel room where I'm staying at the moment:

how much for the cable and converter to 2.5mm balanced ?
thanks

The cable is $20 and the adapter is $10. I also got one adapter to 3.5mm balanced and one to 6.5mm single ended (also $10 each) and iirc shipping with e-packet was about $10 as well.

I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with the PM 1 so hopefully someone else can help you.

As always with VE the quality of the products are great.

The treble is definetly recessed according to my ears. But the biggest problem with the HD 650 is that is super slow and lacks clarity. The Shure SE846 has even more treble roll off than the HD 650 but it doesn't bother me at all (in combination the Chord Mojo)  due to the excellent speed and clarity of the Shure SE846.

If the HD 650 had excellent speed and clarity, I don't think anyone would be complaining with the recessed treble. However it makes the HD 650 quite forgiving which makes the HD 650 quite special.

You'll hear it next to high-end headphones as they are faster and clearer. But it's not a bad thing as it gives the HD 650 the forgiving and smooth sound that it is known for.

Reading a bunch of comments about 650 being "slow" and not "fast and clear."  What are some cans that are "fast and clear" but still have a warm tonality like 650?  Also, can a can be "slow and clear" and if so, what are some examples?

Slow and clear... K701...worse still, K1000.
