Sennheiser hd650 headband replacement warranty?

Hi guys, I did a quick search and wasn't able to find the answer I was looking for. My 9 month old hd650 headband's paint has started to flake and crack. From some of the threads I read, this is a pretty common issue and many people had this happen after their warranty has expired. 
 
Has anybody had any experiences getting a solution through warranty? I was hoping I could take detailed pictures and send them along with my receipt to get a replacement band. Or at most, remove the band from the unit itself and send just the band to sennheiser for a replacement. 
 
However, the sennheiser rep I emailed insists I have to send the entire unit to them. Which I find kind of overkill as the unit itself is working perfectly and I do not want to risk having the unit damaged during shipping or them replacing my unit with a refurbished piece. 
 
I was dealing with sennheiser canada. Have any of you had any success getting a headband replacement under warranty without having to send your entire unit in?

Just send the unit. It's common practice. Did you ask if they would send you a replacement or a new one? Most likely they would send you a new one.
 
If the warranty will cover it, you do whatever you have to.
 
But, there is also the problem with the headband breaking in another 9 months.....
 
Can't speak from personal experience, but at least you have a warranty. I've hear horror stories of people when the warranty ended a couple days before it breaks.
