While i realize that the 580 is much better, all i have is a cmoy amp, and don't see myself buying a new amp anytime.

I was wondering if its worth the extra money to go to the 580 or to get the 555 and then later pruchase the 580?

The 555's in question are those from Ecost.com for 78$.

edit - these phones would be at home use only, I listen to alot of hip-hop and punkish rock (clash, Bloc Party, Futureheads).

What kind of source do you use? Since you don't plan on upgrading, you might as well save some $$$ and grab the HD555's.

hd555 is great with punk/hip hop. good bass slam, with a generally up front and most important, balanced presenation. Bloc party sounds great through my set!

The hd580 is hard to drive and "distant" sounding. Don't think you'd like it with your music tastes.

fyi, I've read that with shipping and handling it comes to more like $85 at ecost. It will benefit from your amp too. Go for it.

Well i have my laptop (Whatever **** soundcard Dell uses -> Logitech Z2300 -> Headphone/Volume controller thinger -> Phones)

And my iPod, but i won't use it with the iPod that much, I'll be using it mostly with my computer as almost all of collection is ripped from CDs to EAC/LAME (Secure mode, proper cfgs, etc.).

The new computer will be made with audio in mind in 2/3 years and I might get a new amp, in like 5 years but by then i don't think i will have to make a choice between headphones.

Enricht - I never said it sounded like "utter crap" w/o an amp nor implied it. I'm only going off what i've been told, that it sounds okay w/o an Amp but a good one really "opens" it up.

Get the HD-580 since you have the CMOY amp. An amped HD580 is revolutionarily better than HD-555.

Having listened to both, Personally i lean towrds the 580's over the 555's. of course im somewhat bias seeing as i made the desicion not to long ago and choose the 580's. When i purchased the 580's i didn't own an amp, but not to long after, i made my own. however i was very content with the sound quality of the 580's without it (i just wanted that extra boost)

hmm, i was gona start a thread like this. dont know how i missed this one. now im torn, i like the fact that someone indicated that the HD555 are more forward and impactufl on the bass. but if i want to stay in the 515/555/595 league, would it be worth it to save up for a HD595? +Cmoy+computer and Minidisc player.

South_Korean - in responce to the 595's ... i think Little j040 said it nicely: "580's sound a bit further back soundstage wise, and there was more "space" between notes, Called (Airyness), which is nice"

i have the 580's and he has the 595's. We both regaurd our cans over the other in certain cituations however in an over comparison im parsial to the 580's
