Hi all, this is my first post and I would like to say hello to everyone. I have been reading the message boards for months and decided to take the plunge. I recently came across my first pair of decent headphones. A pair of Sennheiser HD 540s I purchased many years ago. I had them stored away for a long time and kinda forgot about them. My problem is the ear pads have deteriorated and I haven't been able to find replacements. Anyone know of a source or a substitute for these ear pads?

Welcome to Head-Fi - when you get your answer, it might be wise (certainly cheaper) to run away!

Which country are you in? It would help us suggest a source.

Cheers

See below from Sennheiser. Mine arrived quickly and in perfect shape. The 540 is a fine headphone even if it is a little older. Brighter than the current crop of 5xx and 6xx but really not bad at all, especially with a decent amp.

Hello -

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in Sennheiser. For HD540 cushions, order part number 046962 by phone. Dial x3 for sales to order this. Your cost is $24.00 for a set.

In terms of home cans, HD540s with EQ currently are the point of diminishing returns for me. I still have HD580s but those would need a little work first (headband padding entirely flat, intermittency issues), and I guess I could live happily with HD650s for the rest of my life, but €200 for a comparatively small improvement? Nah. Only problem is getting everything routed through the EQ... (My 3rd sound card came in handy recently when achieving EQ'd playback with Modplug Player. Virtual Audio Cable would've worked, too, but an already present Real Audio Cable and sound card were cheaper.)

I've had my HD540's for many years and love them for their sound quality and comfort level. I had to replace the earcushions and black foam disk that covers the driver area. The prt # is 046962 and they cost $24.00 + $3.50 SH.
When I called Sennheiser they had some coming in from outside the U.S. and I had to wait a little while, but it was well worth it. These cans will go another 15 years. Their phone # is 860 434 9190.
