Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

I've been comparing the RS1x to the 660s2, and the 660s2 seems to be a bit thicker and warmer in the mid-bass, but they are very similar.

Hey all,

I just bought a 6xx, but I'm working on canceling it because I'm unsure of if I should just bite the bullet and get an S2. From what I've read it sounds like it will be what I prefer. I'm into edm, hip hop, and lofi and I like good bass and treble. I also game a lot so better imaging is important.

As an aside, I do have a ZMF Atrium, a ZMF Verite Closed, and a Beyer DT1990. I wanted a senn to have a lighter hp since all mine are quite bulky. As much as I love them it's a bit much some days and I wanted a sennheiser for an "easy to wear" kinda headphone. I figured the 6xx on sale for $200 gives me that light hp and sennheiser reliability with a different sound than the rest of my collection. The more I read about the S2 though, the better it sounds for me.

The big hurtle though is that price. I do recall the 660s dropping in price rather quickly after launch. The S2 currently costs 3x the price of the 6xx, which is a bit too steep IMO. Anyone think it'll get a deeper sale anytime soon? Maybe Prime Day?

It is about time that you buy a proper headphone. One to wear all day without fatigue and only providing great sound.
Plus, life is short.
I have them on right now, R.E.M Everybody Hurts, sounds just awesome, just like it should sound. Ohhh, soo good!

I guess I should've been a bit more descriptive. My DT1990 has dekoni elite velour pads and right now is my "comfortable headphone" that I could likely wear all day. I think the sennheiser could be even more so, but wasn't sure.

Honestly if the S2 provides solid sound for music and gaming, then it could just replace my DT1990 for my "all-rounder" headphone and I might just sell the DT1990 to offset the cost.

I had the DT1990 pro some years ago, I think the HD660S dethroned it as all-rounder. In my opinion, the Beyers are great, but not as well balanced as the Sennheiser HD6..series in general. With the S2 the series has reached a new plateau of performance, that really make it stand out. No Dekoni pads needed to enhance anything. Just a little outward bending of the headband to loosen the out of box grip of the series.

I do honestly love that sennheiser is good straight out of the box and doesn't require eq or different pads like the DT1990. What gets me is this cost, from what I'm reading the S2 is essentially a side grade to something like the 6xx, but it's triple the cost. Hard pill to swallow 😕. Maybe I'll just order one from Amazon to try for now and see how it sounds. I just don't like abusing that return system...

I wish I had a local dealer, but no dice.

You own 2 ZMF headphones and you're here fretting about 660S2's price?

Nobody knows if or when Sennheiser will drop the price again. I was a bit surprised they lowered it to $450 for 1 day and it hasn't even been half a year since the 660S2 got released. Like I said yesterday, if you want a 660S2, now might be the time to buy one. Senn jacked the price back up to $600 on their site but it's still at $500 on Amazon.

I think the 660S2 is a great all-around headphone for most music genres. It replays everything very well. Great tonality, amazing mids, satsifying bass (especially for an open back HP), and detailed but non-sibilant highs. Very dynamic and engaging headphone. I don't think it has the best technicalities though. Soundstage, imaging, and microdetails are decent but not nearly as good as something like my HD700 or even cheap planars like HiFiMans.

Comfort is good but not great. It will have the typical strong clamp force that most Sennheisers have brand new. If you can tolerate clamp force or have a small head, then it shouldn't be an issue. 660S2s are built with the lightweight but strong plastic that the 600 series uses.

I was thinking the same thing. I just bought an S2 used at about $450.00US.

I can't see me ever buying a ZMF, even used.

Well he may be broke after buying these ZMF's? ;)
And 500-600 USD is still a lot of cash, especially when some people claim that the 660S2 isn't necessarily better, but just a different flavor of the HD600/650

It is a side grade to the HD650 like the Sony Z1R is to th Z7. So no it is not.

LOL, I knew someone would bring it up, and this is exactly my problem! I'd like to stop spending money like I did with my ZMFs, so trying to conserve now. I could just...not get any, but I think maybe the S2 could replace my DT1990, so maybe can justify the purchase since I could sell the DT1990 to assist with the cost.

I justified the ZMFs cause they're handmade, unique one-of-a-kind style headphones with lifetime warranties and sound phenomenal. Pulled that trigger (twice), now I don't want to pull a trigger that big anymore lol .

Maybe I will grab S2 from Amazon and give it a whirl for a week or so. If it's really nice, I'll sell my DT1990 and make most of the cost back, if it's not as good then I just return them.

It will certainly be different from your ZMF's and likely a nice change. And Super light compared to everything else I own.
Variety is good. And reasonably affordable is not a bad thing.
