There will IMO now be 660S2 fans for what the S2 is in it own right.
Bingo. The whole 600 series seems to be easy to compartmentalize based on listening taste.

Pink Floyd - DSOTM is generally my first album for any new cans :),......
lol...In light of the 50th Anniversary coming up on March 1st I just pulled out my copy I picked up at the time while in university, sounded as good as ever. Hopefully the S2 will do the base justice. : )
Although I have to admit I'm more of a fan of their earlier stuff.

That's what I think too, while they are similar, the differences will definitely appeal to different people. I ended up getting an HD 600, because honestly they were one of the only headphones I've owned I could sleep with they are so relaxing at lower volumes. They also just sound so natural. All my other headphones basically demand a bit more attention so nothing I could fully relax with like the HD 600, this causes the HD 600 to fill in a niche none of my other headphones fill and was a niche I was looking to fill.

I found the HD 660 S original more of an engaging headphone than the HD 600. I want to try out the HD 660S2 as soon as I'm able and based on impressions it will fill in a different niche for me than the HD 600.

On the note, with staging, I am hearing the music more to the L and R on the S2 vs. the 600. For the 600 the music is right in front of me a bit at the level of my forehead. For the S2 the music expands out to the sides of my head and a few inches in front of me and higher up. At the top of my head level. The music is surrounding me more than the pinpoint positioning of the 600.
Being that I used to be in a band in my younger days with a few studio sessions, realism is where my sound preference became to be and that is why I adore the HD600. The louder the HD600 is played the levels of being in the middle of it all gets even surreal. So in the case of the S2, do you think the 600 series has arrived, capped and or hit the ceiling of being an intimate headphone?

I realize many of you are not native English speakers so:

"Base" can be used for things like "military base" or "the base of a speaker stand".

"Bass" is the low frequencies of sounds.
Yes it can be confusing and there has been a lot of dissusion on that specific topic, feel free to use one or the other...I used bass for years but was then corrected as folks insisted bass is a fish or a musical term for low pitched notes.
Base is the foundation or underpinning, so a sub woofer adds base or sound pressure not necessarily defining a bass note if the that makes.
"these headphones have a lot of base and and I can clearly distinguish the bass notes."
Hope that helps

The fact that "bass" is also a type of fish, does not mean that "base" is also appropriate here.

Feel free to look things up in a dictionary (the place where words are officially defined - rather than the internet where anything can mean anything).

But I'll make it easy:

Is it a "bass guitar" or a "base guitar"? How about a "bass drum" vs a "base drum"? If you're not sure, shop for either and see what they're called.

I agree. I use my HD650 when I just want to relax. They don’t have harsh trebles or annoying subbass. And that’s why HD650/600 still have their place.
