I just auditioned the HD800s this week, and I'm now considering one of the 600 series as my next test. Perfect timing on that article for me, looking forward to reading it when the kid is at sleep. Thanks a lot
I'd say my own comparative observations line up precisely with yours, thanks for the review.
"The HD800S is without doubt technically superior to the HD660S2. It offers more detail and the soundhstage is extraordinary. However, the HD660S2 has something else: A more balanced, well rounded sound-signature and better visceral qualities. There’s simply put more slam and punch."
When you first mentioned it, I looked at some reviews, and I liked the look of the MW50.
I am pretty happy with 458BT for watching series and movies when I am in bed. I already said it: the surround effect is obvious, and the bass is deep when it comes to it; the dialogue is nice and clean. But for music, I still didn't explore them enough. I briefly connected to YouTube when we were talking a while ago, hm, and it didn't work well. When I connected them before to DAP/player, they were decent, as I remember, but the first thing that didn't go well with TV/YouTube music was that they didn't have enough volume; I am at 55% when watching movies, but at 100% with Youtube wasn't too loud; I'd say it was on the verge of not being enough.
My wife bought herself for work (translating and subtitling series and films) recently Sennheiser HD300. I saw these on the internet as very light, so that's the first thing she needs for work; then the pads seemed like in HD450, which I consider very comfortable and soft. After all, the sound is not bad at all, and they cost $40: pretty interesting comfort, light and decent-sounding Sennheiser, and very cool headphones.

This echoes my impression of the 660S2 and my belief that it is held back by it's difficulty with staging. I feel i have mitigated on this largely with the ZMF fenestrated pad mod.
After some 25 years with Grado RS1, I feel a need for change. During last few years in my family we bought several Sennheiser lesser phones and I find myself liking very much their cohesive and sweet presentation so my plan was to buy some HD6XX model.
I was very excited and optimistic about that plan, so I spent today whole evening listening to HD600, HD660S and HD660S2 at dealers place.
I listened to all of them through top line Yamaha integrated amp headphone output, top of the line Musical Fidelity DAC and headphone amp, some mini Yamaha system and few other less known amps.
I was extremely optimistic and I been confident that I will come back home with some pair of new phones, but…
All three pairs sounded very boxy no matter of source and the amp and I mean really very boxy and they sounded like not just veiled, but like several carpets are between me and the band playing literrary in the box.
I would not like to just let that go, so I thought it would be the best to adl here where are many HD6XX owners who have much experience with this models.
Needs to say that I immediately heard they fantastic transient response which is breathtaking through every of them, altough piano and clarinet for example have way too much pinch which produce headache on any of them.
What do you think what could be the reason? Have you experienced something like that with some of that models?
You are not alone. The first time I put on HD660S, I immediately understood the famous Sennheiser veil that people talked about. It created an almost compressing claustrophobic feeling. I even compared with a $5 earbud to confirm that characteristic. However, I didn't gave up and get used to it after about 3 months of use.
Our experiences differ though on piano. I found both 660S and S2 inefficient and lack of excitement.
