Intro:

I decided to finally replace my ear cushions on my headphones. They were pretty disgusting; the foam was mostly disintegrated and the velour was matted beyond repair. I, of course, looked to see what a new set of ear cushions cost and was shocked to see they were well over $60 on pretty much every site. I figured I might as well try to see what I could do first before shelling out that much first. Seeing as I could not find a write up of anyone else attempting something like this (without needing to sew up a set of custom pads) I thought I would share in case it was helpful to anyone else.

I looked up the stated dimensions of the HD 600 ear cushions/ear pads and went hunting. I found that the ear pads for the Shure 840 headphones were supposedly near identical in size so I ordered them. These earpads are "leather", but they are only slightly smaller than the oem cushions. If I were to do it again, I might have shelled out more money for the velour ones for the model 940 which were around $24 dollars on Amazon; I am not entirely sure that they are the same size. I only know this works for the 840 cushions. I managed to get the set of Shure 840 ear pads brand new and for only $12 w/ free shipping on ebay.

Materials:

Shure 840 ear cushions, original HD 600 pads, Locktite Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic flexible adhesive, straight razor blade or Exacto knife, a few cotton swabs to clean up any excess glue.

Method:

All I did was pop out the Sennheiser cushions, carefully remove to old foam and fabric with a straight razor blade (an Exacto knife might have been a bit better) until all I was left with was the plastic oval which locks into the headphones. I then used Locktite Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic flexible adhesive top glue the oval (making sure to put it on the proper way) to the replacement Shure earpads. I am recommending this glue as it did not seem to damage any of the materials(superglue eats through some foam) and holds quite well. DO NOT GET IT IN YOUR EYE(S)!! The adhesive set very quickly though so I would recommend putting the glue directly onto the remaining plastic oval in a fairly thick and continuous bead and then placing that oval onto the backside of the earpads. Note that I did not bother tapping off the pads to keep any glue from getting on them as I didn't feel it was really necessary, just don't go overboard with it.

I then let them cure for a few hours while I took care of other things. When I came back I saw that the glue had cured quite nicely and was sufficiently strong to allow me to place and pull out the earpads from the headphones (make sure you feel the ring click into place securely). Don't forget to remove that old nasty layer of foam that was squished in place by the ear cushions as these pads have that built in.

Pictures and final thoughts:

Below I've attached links to pictures of the finished result and the glue I used (I would attach them directly, but I'm a new member so I can't). I also attached a few pictures of the headband cushion I bought, as that foam was ENTIRELY disintegrated so as to leave the headband basically flat, and the small strip of flexible packing material I used as a backer to it as I found it too soft by itself.

I hope this helps anyone who is googling for a solution to this problem and stumbles upon this page and also for the rest of the members of the forum as well. I did not do a step by step tutorial as I only had about 10 minutes to do this earlier today for the mod and because it is pretty self-explanatory. I really just wanted to show that the 840 cushions could be used as a replacement for about a fifth the price of oem pads.
