Sorry i cannot agree with what the guy above wrote. But then again. Its clear he did not perform the Mod. The 558 is pretty darned close to the 598 and  there is more bass in the 558. The headphone needs adequate burn in and the mod performed on it to really shine.

Unless you were looking for insane amounts of bass i think the 558 is a very suitable headphone for someone who is looking to get their first decent set of cans.  I also use mine for gaming all the time and they work great. If you go for the 598 you may run the risk of not appreciating the sound signature due to its slightly brighter presentation.

Not liking the sound signature can be said about any headphone. The mod voids the warranty so it shouldnt be said casually "oh just do the mod". One thing that's been overlooked, what genre of music will you be listening to OP?

I own three Beyerdynamic headphones(DT770s & DT990), which are bassy.
But I can still put on my HD558s and feel I'm getting decent bass.

This graph shows the frequency response of the hd 558 and hd 598, as you can see they have a very similar frequency response, though a frequency response graph doesn't mean everything but you can have a brief idea of how different they will sound.

I own a pair for the PC 360's.  Very little bass.  I use it when playing online games that need voice chat.  However, if i want to play a game with some bass, I just put on my AT M50's.  The only reason why the PC 360's hardly have any bass is to hear the people you're trying to play with, which actually helps when explosions are happening in the background.

If you can perform the mod without damaging the casing ... one would assume you can and should be competent to put it back in if necessary without any problems regarding warranty. There are videos on how to perform the mod so yes in my opinion this is not a big deal. Persons on this forum have been modifying various models of Sennheiser headphones for years. This is no different.

I listen to a lot of dubstep as well as rock, anime soundtrack music, new age piano, classical, techno... etc.

I've done the foam mod and I can easily slap them back on for any warranty purposes. The bass is quite light. HOWEVER, with my Fiio e10 with the bass boost on, the bass is just perfect. It doesn't creep up when it shouldn't, and it hits nice and tight. I can listen to these for hours on end with zero fatigue.

I bought a pair of HD25-1's to "upgrade" but I foolishly didn't do my research beforehand. Needless to say I'm probably going to sell them here as I just use my iem's for when I go out.

hey guys, I just found this. I live in Canada here where they only sell the 558, which is $250. They don't sell the 598s here, but on the Sennheiser website, it said average retail price is $379. I check on BestBuy US website, the 598 is $250 O.o . I only live 15 minutes away from the border, so it wouldn't be a problem to go there. Should I go get the 598s? (btw, the only difference is CAD and USD currency is only by .3 cents)

Yeah these can be had for quite cheap. I live in Canada as well and I paid about $140 shipped for mine new in box. Theres someone selling a used pair on my local craigslist for $100 too. With the foam mod, it is pretty much a HD598 with a different colour scheme and grill :p

alright. Im basically sold on the brand new 598 for $250. thats pretty good considering the retail price is about $380. Also, if any1 knows, will a 598 work well with a AntLion ModMic or just a PC360?

It will work with the mod, however, $250 is pretty hefty for a 598. At least shoot for 200, perhaps checked the used section?

Currently the HD598 is selling for $250 (high price), a few months before Christmas it could drop as low as $175.
There is the "Sennheiser HD598 Appreciation Thread", should be a good thread to ask about the mic mods.

Something about Sennheiser enforcing the $250 price so it's unlikely we'll ever see $175 again. That's why I suggest checking out the FS forum before they end up being gone

Sennheiser will have to drop prices in the last three months of the year or they will not sell very many headphones.
