Hello, I have recently been thinking about getting the HD 598s, I listen to a wide range of music, play games, and watch movie and I thought that the 598 would be a good headphone for me. However I have been reading that the 558 are basically the same headphone (or very similar.) So which one should I go for? they are both VERY similarly priced, the HD558 currently is @ Amazon for $143.36 & the HD598 for $147, so they are VERY similarly priced. I do listen to lots of Rock (and metal), and have heard the the 598s aren't the best for that. but like I said I listen to a huge wide variety of music. If someone could give me a comparison between the two that would be awesome! -Connor

This is the mod that is claimed to make the HD558 sound very similar to the HD598. I haven't tried it, YMMV...

The justification for the mod is that the 598 is usually quite a bit more than the 558. I've seen the 598's float closer to $180-$190 mark, while the 558's spend more time around the $120 mark. Also, if you can pick up a used 558, it's even cheaper. (Note: these prices are entirely determined by my memory, so follow at your own risk.)

Regardless, both models are from the same people and have the same general goal of being neutral. They might not have the same "pop" as headphones geared specifically toward rock (and metal), but they should sound at least "good" with any genre.

Yes, the HD598 has only recently come down in price. It used to be much closer to a $200 street price. And then, of course, there is the style aspect. Some people simply cannot stand the cream-colored HD598.

So, if the HD598 are less than $10 more, should I go for those?

There was a time when the HD598 sold for $250 and the HD558 $180.
I thing I paid around $145 for my HD558, that was around 2 years ago and I thought I was getting a really good price.
As it's only a few dollars more for the HD598, might as well get the HD598.
The HD598 should provide a better resale value, over the HD558.

IMO yes, most should prefer used HD598 in real good condition rather than modifying HD558

And some months ago HD598 went as low as $99, or in EU for 99€
Kinda regret not grabbing it during the sale. 99€ is such a good price

No reasonably sane person is going to pay more for a used pair than they can for a new pair. So, if the price keeps going down, then you have to adjust your reale price down. If the price goes back up, then it's possible you might get lucky. Just look at the current used prices on the Denon D2000 & D5000. I've recently seen used going for more than their MSRP. I wonder if Denon actually understands what they did when they became Beats Wannabes.

As for Neo's question--there are several 598's for sale on this and other boards at the moment. Most are selling in the range of $130-$160 US, depending. It seems if you're patient, good things come your way.

I think the HD5x8s have gone down to their lowest possible prices. Perhaps Sennheiser will replace them really soon, we never know. I remember when I first started stepping into the "audiophile" headphone world, the HD555 was still making wave
