Anybody ever try both of these? I have the opportunity to purchase both of them brand new for an excellent deal from a buddy.

EH350 for $50
HD428 for $20

Any comfortability preference?
Bass better on one?
Do you recommned a portable amp?

I tend to listen to everything from classic rock to rap. Currently using the Bose Triports and need a change for the better.

I have done a few searches and I read a lot about people comparing HD280 and the HD428, but not too many threads about the EH350's.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Seen in the chart below the HD 428 actually has better bass extension and will be less bright.

I had to dig around to find those old charts.

I own a pair of EH 250 headphones and I used to like them for the price, but looking at the charts now I would go for the HD 428 without hesitation.

Both are pretty bad for bass to be honest, but at least the HD428s are fairly tight, and you can actually get a decent amount of bass through tuning it with the tape mod. That's when you take off the earpads, unscrew the drivers off, in the back are three holes covered by a piece of tape, for every hole you poke out, the more air the driver has and the greater the bass quantity - it can get quite nauseating with all three holes uncovered, so one hole would be fine. Midrange is some of the clearest for the price, and treble is nice and smooth. If you have to choose between the two, HD428 any day.

Brightness refers to when a headphone can have a few upward bumps in its frequency response between 2kHz and 10kHz.  Brightness is the descriptor the community uses to represent slight harshness in the treble or at a minimum a definite peaky behavior.

The opposite turn, when the headphone has some peaks in the bass or is more bass tilted, is called darkness.
