looking to add a senn to my headphone collection. requirements are sound quality, comfort, price to performance (don't want to pay 200 dollars more for something not noticeabley better off the bat) . source is emu 0404 to shellbrook audio pimeta opa627. music listened to is mainly rock, metal, classic rock, classical (alot of piano and strings).

Depends on what price you can get for those models ... use the search button and you'll find some recent discussions like this. My bang for the buck senns are still 595, followed by 580 and 590. Best one with no consideration for wallet of course would be 650. I bet soon some team kill-595 would bash them here ... but at half the price of 650 they give pretty good taste of latest TOTL senn.

From best to worst:

Comfort: 590/595 --> 580/600/650

Performance/Price ratio (this is though, allow me to edit later if I feel like it!

): 580 --> 600 --> 590 --> 650 --> 595

Sound quality: 650 --> 600/580 --> 590 --> 595

Sound quality: 650 > 595 >= 600 > 580 >> 590

Don't take either as True...

I'm bumping this up because I'm wondering the same thing. I'm thinking that I want to buy some open headphones to supplement my HD-280. I have read many post but most of them don't really apply to me. I don't listen to any particular type of music, I like all kinds. It is said that the 580 needs an amp, I have one (Pimeta) but that isn't a $1000 one that many have, so amps are really on different levels. Then I wonder if I just want to bite the bullet and buy the 650's to save on later upgrade costs. Also I wonder if I should look at Grados or Alessandro. Finally maybe I should just sit on my equipment for a while longer.

I just picked up a pair of the refurb'd 600s from amazon.com and they are great (everything is like new). For $200 I think they are a great buy. The 650s supposedly have better bass and the 600s are a little more articulate but I have not A/Bd them. I drive them with a Headroom Cosmic (<$1k amp).

I got the 600s for lengthy sit-down listening and as a change of pace from my ER-4Ps.

Thats not possible... 600 is not > then 580. They use the same driver and cable.

I compared the 580 to the 650 and concluded that although the 650 was better i would be perfectly happy with the 580 if budget was a problem. Then i compared the 580 with the 555 and concluded that i would not be happy with the 555. I have never tried the 595 so i cannot say how good they are. They would have to be really good to beat the 580 especially at some of the prices the 580 are selling for. Why did you sell your 650s? Did you feel that they were overpriced or were you seduced by the sa-5000 like i have been.lol

I agree, the 650/600/580 sound much better than the 590/595.

If I were you, I'd grab a used set of whatever you want, that way you can re-sell easily. Do you not have any stores that stock sennheiser near you?

Everyone is just going to post their personal opinion here, you know what the answers will be most likely, go hear some for yourself.

How do I tell? I looked it up at Sennheiser it listed a bunch but I doubt for example that Circuit City carries any more that the <$30 models. Do I need to call them and ask?

590 and 580 better than the 595???

You're crazy, man. :p

I can see the 650 and, to a lesser extent depending on taste, the 600, but not the other two.

My scale: 650 > 580, 600 > 595

But I just didn't like the HD595, and obviously there are people who feel differently. At the very least, try out one of the flagship Sennheisers and a 555 or 595 to see which signature you take to better.. it's just blind guessing anyway.

The HD590 is nice if you're a bass-n-treble type (don't mean to imply that there's anything wrong with that, each to their own). Otherwise, you probably won't like it.

Then why not at least the 580? The HD580 and HD600 share the same transducers, cable, and enclosures. Any tiny differences between the two (more than likely placebo, but I didn't say that) are supposedly eliminated by the addition of metal grilles on the HD580. HD600 owners, pretend I didn't say that.

HD650 are soooo comfortable for me much moreso than the HD555/595. The sound quality is much better with the 650s as well over the treble-happy 555/595 series. The 650s have so much better instrument separation, clarity, lack of graininess, and a surprisingly larger sound-field (I try to refrain from using the word "soundstage" with regards to headphones).

For me:

SQ:
650 > 595/555 (dont know where the 600/580 would fit here)

Comfort:
650/600/580 > 595/555

I like the senn 600 > 650. In fact, I like the 600 > any other headphone.

I would recommend a pair of the 600 refurbs from Amazon.

Add a cardas or headphile upgrade cable at some later date and your set.
