I mean relatively the rega ear/650 combo might sound good, but I didn't think it was able to bring the 650s to a satisfying level of performance.

Hi,
I never said that they are the end-all be-all headphone, sorry if it sounded that way. Fact is I like them more than the Beyerdynamic Dt 880 and I think it's better to start with a good headphone and then consider the source or amp, especially if these upgrades are already planned for somewhere down the road anyway. Imo the headphone will have the biggest influence on the entire system.

Edit: A HD 650 out of a portabe cd player will still sound horrible though.

I have sold the DT880's, i wanted to try something else. Don't get me wrong, the sound og DT880's was good. But i hope that HD650 will sound better for me. I have now Audigy2, shall i upgrade the source to E-MU0404 first? Or get an amp? (Rega Ear or Musical Fidelity X-CANV2) Will 0404 drive the senn's "ok"? Better than A2?

I think "ok" is an accurate description although you will need an amp to get the most out of the 650s. I would pick a 650 unamped out of a 0404 over an amped A2. I'm a firm believer in source first.

You know, many of you guys keep forgetting to tell someone that they may only ever be happy with their HD650 if they pair it with a $200 Zu Mobius cable. The HD650 is much more expensive a headphone than its stand-alone price indicates!

I'm happy with hd650.
It's a very upgradable hp , but I'm happy with it even when it's driven by the stock cable( the aftermarket cable CHANGE - quite often "open" - the sound)
anyway I'd try (and probably be pleased by) the dt880

( ps hint if you want to swap dt880 and try for a time hd650 , It's likely I'll do )

no matter what, you will need a very good amp for the hd-650s.
And I think you sold your DT880s without even giving them a chance. With your current source and lack of amp, there's no way you could tell how the 880s sound.

Well, you've probably right Natsuiro. I have only heard them from Audigy2. And i liked what i heared even then. But now i have to focus on the HD650! Which i will get tomorrow.

The Audigy 2 (along with every digital computer source I've tried, non-DAC) is vastly underpowered and far less refined than either the DT880 or HD650.

If you are just going to be listening to music, keep the DT880s and invest in a longterm plan of a $1000++ source/amp combo minimum. Or if you hate the sound of the DT880s (too dry and bright) then you can sell them and get HD650. Otherwise, keep the DT880 and go with them.

If you are going for gaming, I don't even know why you bought such an expensive headphone. IMHO there are models that do the same job only are cheaper and require less of an amp (PX100 DT250-80 SR-60).

Cheers,
Geek

Yea I liked the K501 more than the 650s, but I haven't tried the 650s with an upgraded cable or dt880s. The K501s are cheap, but driving them is def not.

The DT880 and HD650 really sound quite close. The DT880 has a bit more treble, and as such is a bit airier, whereas the Senn has a bit more bass and sound a bit more direct and powerful, properly driven of course. The Beyers clamp a bit less, and their velpur pads are softer IMO. Also they seem a bit better built, like they would withstand more abuse. The Beyers are a bit harder to drive though, due to lower efficiency.

But how long shall i burn them in? When i go to bed, is it necessary to burn them in then? It wonæt hurt to shut them off then.. And continue in the morning?

I think they sound great right out of the box! On Audigy2!

Yes, absolutely! Or more seriously: it's useful to let it play over night. And give it some stuff -- and lots of bass! Mine needed 150 hours until it sounded «right». However, interrupting the break-in process and continuing the other day doesn't hurt.

Congrats on your new headphone!
