So I’ve decided to build some cables. I like fiddling with soldering irons and the like, and making stuff. Been reading a fair bit.

I have a campfire Andro S, and really enjoy the Litz silver braided cable in terms of both looks and function, so I’ll be trying for something similar.

AliExpress seems to have a large variety of ‘litz’ OCC And silver plated OCC cables available (want to get a bit of both, for aesthetics more than anything, clear jackets).

I’m thinking I should be looking for something in the 26-28 AWG, maybe 24 for a 4 conductor/for cables for bigger phones. So between 1-0 and 1.2mm diameter with the jacket.

From what I’ve been able to gather, Teflon is probably a no-go (stiff), but I’m unclear on the relative merits of PVC cans PE (vs. TPU) coated wires. Flexibility/softness is an important aspect.

I have a few Ali wires that look interesting (mid-priced), biggest difference being the core counts (ranging from 19 to 100+). I’m guessing more cores is more flexible, but perhaps also more fragile and harder to work with? If they all had shorter samples I might consider just ordering a meter and a bit of each just to get the feel (I can always use it as pricey wiring for my electric guitars...), but 6 meters at a time and 30-40 bucks a pop is a touch much for a gamble. Anyone care to comment on these wires, for example:

...anyone?

Feels bad bro. I'm trying to ask exactly the same question here in 2020 myself. Thanks for all the links :)

I managed to get a teeny amount of information from here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/iem-cables.432328/
The jena labs 22 awg stuff looks great if you are willing to pay the insane price.

I hope that in the last 5 years you have managed to find a good resource.
If you have found anything do you mind giving me a hand with finding some decent wire?

Cable impedance is important for low impedance IEMs, but wire size and flexibility is important.

20AWG fine strand silicone wire is largest that can be used (and maybe it is already too thick and heavy), with OD of 1.5mm. Smaller wire means too much resistance/impedance added to amp ZOUT.
