Or is the ipod not a good enough driver to let the se530 shine?

will i experience a hissing sound?

edit: i have the ipod 5g 30 gb.
edit again: i am not looking to push the se530 to its fullest potential......i just want to be able to hear its quality.

Definitely worth it. If you worry, you can use the small volume pod to reduce hissing.

Definitely worth it. They are some great earphones.

Just make sure you're using well ripped music, preferably lossless with the SE530's, if you listen to MP3's at 128kbps they'll sound pretty awful. I'd say 192 absoloute minimum, and using the LAME encoder for MP3's is also a good option.

If you have a multimeter handy, get the resistance of the Shure attenuator to about the 100-ohm level and find a way to fix it (tape will do for starters). It will flatten out the response of the iPod and eliminate hiss. I have measured some notable variety in left-right response though, and unfortunately it's kind of unavoidable due to the low cost of the potentiometer involved.

One other (much more expensive) alternative is the Etymotic ER-4P > S cable.
Etymotic ER-4P to ER-4S Adapter @ HeadRoom - Right Between Your Ears
The change does have an effect on the tone of the sound as well as eliminating hiss, so before splurging for the Ety cable you should definitely try the included attenuator first.

Personally, I can live with the hiss for everyday casual use.

It is a trade off. But since the volume pod comes free with SE530, I guess it s a trade off easily made.

The Classic's noisefloor is very decent actually. The iPhone 2G is pretty bad

Straight out of an iPod, like the Nano 3G they sound very good. But when I want to hear every single detail, I use my Corda Move to amp them, and oh dear.. They sound delicious!

Anyone teaming the Shures with a 4G Nano yet? I am looking to use the Nano for music only and my iPhone for everything else.

Very happy with the sound quality of the iPhone/SE530 combo. Seems they like to be played a bit loud though/
