As with everything in life it comes down to personal preference. Having tried to evaluate several models, I have just decided to commit to the Modi/Magni combo. My reasoning is based on using only flac or wav files out of my Mac Book Pro (currently to an optical input DAC) and that gives me a sound I like to then feed into my Little Dot, or my Neco, or directly in to my Marantz amp.
The key points for me are a) I like a full and rich sound, b) I prefer to use a separate DAC to my Mac Books and c) I like to switch between Headphones and speakers with ease, depending on whether or not I have to keep it down.
I am not sure if this helps, but for me this combo gives me the sound I imagine, which is what I what is paramount foe me. Given that I tend to listen to Alex Harvey, The Faces, Dylan, The Who and The Stones, with a smattering of Soul and Reggae I prefer a full bottom and mid-range with the ability to occasionally touch the sky with the highs.
Best of luck in your search for your sound.
