Schiit Vali 3 : Impressions Thread

Anyone compare the Vali 3 against the Apos Gremlin?

I like the looks, build and Vali 3 better and essential for me is the preamp out because I listen to mostly speakers and only headphones/iems when necessary.

The Germlin also requires 2 x 12AU7 tubes, so not as cost effective tube roll.

That aside..curious about the sound quality comparisons. It also supports balanced outs, if you care about that.
I've heard earlier versions of the Appos, via a different brand - does not compare well to Vali 3. It's a low plate voltage design - tubes are not operating in their happy place, more like their grotty spot. Also slowly burns a pair of tubes for no benefit, unless you need to run 100ft cables from your balanced DAC.

Doesn't the G1217 Solstice only run 24v plates? How low is too low?

12V.

Also... depends on the tube. The low plate voltage car radio tubes, like the 6GM8 have a max rating of 30V and sounded very good in the Solstice. When I used it in my 1950s Nash listening station. :dt880smile:

I'd hate to be on the road and have a flat tire in that. 🤣

My experiences with the Modi Multibit V2 > Vali 3 > Susvara / Bakoon Amp 13-R

Ran the Sylvania 5670 for a few days until the MMBv2 burned in for 24hs. No complaints about the sound. I'd call it a well balanced, neutral yet enjoyable experience. No glaring weaknesses.

And then yesterday my GE JAN 5670W arrived and I've been running that for a couple of days. Same experience. Well balanced, neutral, yet enjoyable sounds either no glaring weaknesses.

I'd be happy to live with either of these tubes for a while under normal circumstances...but of course, who of us audiophiles are normal?

Also just arrived was my Brimar CV4033. I've read several say this is an awesome upgrade over any of the 5670s. Maybe this goes for many of the Brimars...because I read this about the Brimar CV4033 and also the CV4003. I thought I had ordered the wrong tube!

Unfortunately, I can't try it out yet. Still waiting for my slew of adapters to arrive and I think my 12AU7/12AX7 to 5670 adapter will not arrive for another 3-6 weeks.

Also in the testing lineup will be Cryotone 12BH7, Cryotone 6922, Cryotone 6SN7, Grand Fidelity Treasure Globe 6SN7SE, Genelex Gold Lion 6922.

Still very curious about the WE 396 since this is generally considered one of the best native tubes so I have a reference point, but damn, they are way too expensive at $279 USD + shipping and taxes.

I've got one for sale for a lot less than that in the classifieds HERE.

.... at Tube Depot. When I bought mine (as tube/adapter combo) a few years ago, the price was $139 per combo ....
