Well, I decided I needed some Tungsram in my life... Just got two of these 1960 12AU7's delivered today. As I am warming it up (with some Dave Matthews) and writing this, it is already pleasant sounding to my ears. We'll see where this evenings music journey leads...plenty of albums to go through! :notes:

Where did you order your pair from?

Edit 1: Add a 1960s Mullard 12AU7 to my Tube purchases for the day. Now I will close the Etsy tab before I end up ordering something else.

I've yet to discover a "bad" sounding tube in the Vali 3.
😉👍
.... a 'bad' sounding tube in Vali 3 is likely to be one that is incompatible with Vali 3: e.g. 12AX7 / ECC83 (too much gain). Tubes with high microphonics may sound 'bright', 'hollow' .... [watch for this in WE396, I've sent back a few to the seller(s)]

I haven't had a WE 396 that wasn't microphonic to some degree. But they all sounded good to me.

Would I want one in a guitar amp where the tube is actually more likely to be affected by feedback from the speaker? No. But with a headphone amp it's no big deal to me. As long as there is some isolation.

As someone who wants to try Tubes (and has a Fiio K11 R2R for the Dac function) would the Vali 3 be a good partner to try? I use both over ear and IEMs.

If it is what should be my first replacement tube? Thanks
Vali 3 is a great way of dipping your toes into the world of tubes. Several people in this thread pair the k11 R2R with their Vali 3 so you would be in good company. I will leave it to them to recommend tubes for that combo though. I am not an IEM user, but I have been enjoying the Vali 3 with all my headphones.

I 'm using my FiiO K11 R2R with my Vali 3 for the first time and the initial impression is good. More listening is needed. Recommendation for tubes are use the stock tube for a while. Then if you want to try something different, A Reflektor 6N26P or GE 5 Star 5670 would be good tubes to step up to. They can be had for $20-30 with shipping. Good luck.
