Schiit Valhalla 3 - Impressions Thread

But is it early batches that are having this issue? How is the issue being resolved?
I had an early unit (ordered as soon as they were available) and after some short troubleshooting over email Schiit replaced my unit.

This thing sounds great and Schiit has always been responsive and taken care of their customers so I wouldn't hesitate to order at this stage.

Well I have the Feliks Echo Mk2 which uses the same tube types as the Valhalla 3. Would the Valhalla 3 be more of a side grade than an upgrade?

Valhalla 3’s protection circuit behaves exactly as designed.

It’s designed to trip on overcurrent to protect your headphones, but also above a certain amount of distortion from second-order harmonics.

One of the complaints that kept coming up about Valhalla 2 was that it doesn’t sound quite as great into certain low-impedance headphones, with certain tubes, or a combination thereof.

Valhalla 3’s protection circuit steps in when the combination of headphones and tubes gets you into that area where things start to sound less then stellar, and it triggering tells you that it’s maybe not the best combination for your listening pleasure.

With that said, you can contact our customer support and have your unit sent in for an adjustment of the protection circuit so that it triggers at higher levels of second-order harmonics. It won’t change the sonic characteristics of the amp, but you will hear more distortion once you get into the area where it triggered before.

There’s no need to contact us if your Valhalla 3 doesn’t trip. Because, again, all of the units that have shipped work exactly as designed, even the handful ones that do trip depending on the headphones and tubes used.

Units that have shipped on or after May 9 already have that adjustment in place.

Thanks for the info, @ArmchairPhilosopher !

So Schiit is deciding what is best for my listening pleasure? I thought sound preference was subjective and different for each individual. What if I enjoy a certain set of tubes with a certain headphone? So I can't do that with the Valhalla 3 if it's "less than stellar" according to Schiit?

Kind Sir, the comment you responded to just stated the opposite of what you have mentioned.

I was going on this part here. "Valhalla 3’s protection circuit steps in when the combination of headphones and tubes gets you into that area where things start to sound less then stellar, and it triggering tells you that it’s maybe not the best combination for your listening pleasure." So how I replied is just how that read to me.

I'm interested in getting this amp. But it seems like there is issues with it. At least for some users. Maybe it's a particular batch. But I'll wait for now and see how things go.
The trigger happy protection cut-out issue's root cause was identified and resolved. Units now shipping should have no issues with that. Mine (a replacement -- not a repair) is working fabulously.

** If there are any folks that bought early and are experiencing protection cut-outs with no obvious cause, contact Schiit and get 'er done!!!

No. Schiit has decided how they want this amp to sound. You either like it, or you don't. It's that simple, and conspiracy theories are irrelevant.

I know Schiit has a "house sound" like most audio companies. That's not what I meant. It's just how I interpreted how the person worded their post.

"Behaves exactly as designed" but also there was an issue that had to be resolved and it only applies to new units shipping now.

I own a lot of Schiit products relative to any other brand and I'm a big fan of their stuff, but I call a spade a spade. This is the third mid-to-large size amp in a row launched with major quirks following the Lyr+ and M3.

I'm realizing with Schiit products just like any product nowadays, the early adopters are the beta testers. The best time to buy is months afterwards when you can get the quirk-free version.

Thanks for making this post.

My unit shipped out the 7th, so I guess I just missed the adjustments.

But this sounds like what is causing my issues.

I am going to try and see if Schiit will exchange my V3.
