Schiit Valhalla 3 - Impressions Thread

After more listening and trying some things, the only time I seem to have protection mode kick in is when I have my Lokius output into the Valhalla. When I skip the Lokius and go straight from Saga 2 to Valhalla, no problems at all. I wonder what the issue there is. It doesn’t happen all the time, mostly if I switch headphones while the Valhalla is still on, and usually just to a higher impedance headphone. Maybe I should be doing that when the unit is off anyway?

All of this to say, these aren’t major issues at all, just learning how to use it and what it can/can’t do.

The sound is fantastic.
The same thing is still happening to me....and tonight I received a longer power cord for the Valhalla 3 so that I could connect it to a different outlet (with nothing else connected) instead of my surge protector. But unfortunately, the protection mode audio cutouts are still occurring. For reference, I always use high gain & impedance for my 420 ohm headphones.

I might have to RMA my V3, as these tubes all work without any issues on my V2... Very unfortunate =/

Edit - It isn't the DAC in my case, as my other amps (V2 & Drop+SMSL HO150X) don't experience any audio cutouts when connected instead of my V3.

What is your take on these tube adapters? I have the Feliks Echo Mk2 which uses the same tube types as the Valhalla 3. But apparently it's a bad idea to use 6SN7 tubes in the amp with adapters. Any issues with the Valhalla 3?
I’ve used 6SN7s and 7N7s via adapter a great deal. But the amplification factor is lower than 6N1Ps. My favourite tube (by a long shot) is a Raytheon 5670 windmill getter (obv with adapter).

If I want a darker sound for this amp, like really tame highs, what tubes should I be looking at?

The stock tubes seem to have a little bit of that going on, but I want…..more!!

Hey. We’ve been speaking on Reddit about our experiences (I have my JJ tubes coming in a couple days). Sorry to hear that your problem still persists, even when connecting direct to an outlet. Sounds like you gave it a solid chance, so reaching out to Schiit is warranted at this point. Hopefully it’s just a swap or they can let you know what the issue is.

I’m still troubleshooting a left channel issue. I switched the stock tubes to different sides to see if I still get the issue. Other than that, I’ve really been enjoying the amp.

.... is conditional enjoyment really enjoyment?

I'll give this a try since I don't use the Lokius much unless I am playing loud and then I just use it to tone the bass down a bit. I had a few times tonight where it went into protection and at this point I am sure it doesn't have anything to do with mode or volume since it even did it once with nothing playing.

With Schiit, conditional enjoyment is part of the charm 😅. My Mjolnir 3 cracks, pops, can warm a room, but I’m not getting rid of it any time soon.

In all seriousness though, let's hope these initial observations get ironed out so we can continue to obssess over other things, like which tube to buy next...

As a crack owner, I'm very interested in comparing the sound of Valhalla 3. Could you share your impressions?
Unfortunately, I don't have a Valhalla 3 on hand to make that comparison. At this point, I’m probably holding out for a good deal on a used Woo WA2 as the next logical step in my OTL journey beyond my BHC + Speedball.

For nonal (nine-pin) tubes, I have used this for a few years. IMG_1124.jpegIt really helps when 'detubing' h/p/a such as Mjolnir 2, Valhalla 2, Liquid Platinum. With a little creative effort, I have also removed Pulse Tube Store / Tubemonger adapters from such h/p/a.
Yeah, but......uncalloused fingertips are a sure sign of a tube newbie. 🤣

Has Schiit addressed the protection triggers/audio cut outs in the Schiit Happened thread? That thread is just too big for me to follow, way too much activity. I'm really curious what's going on with the affected units, and I can't be alone in being apprehensive to purchase until it's been fixed.

Call me crazy, but I'm really thinking of a V3/Mimir stack for gaming/tv. I normally just use a simple Midgard/Modi 3+ but find it a bit bright/harsh at higher volume. I tried using my Bifrost 2/Aegis one weekend out of curiosity, and heck if that didn't sound amazing. I figured tv/game audio wasn't worth a nicer setup, but that taught me otherwise. I'm not relegating the Aegis to gaming duty, that's a bit overkill, but a nice V3/Mimir stack seems legit. Plus the V3 just looks sick. That's reason enough to buy, right? :)

I have been emailing Schiit about this issue and so far they agree that it is most likely a voltage issue with using tubes not listed in the manual, or faulty tubes.

So I don't believe there is an issue to be 'fixed,' so much as the V3 just will not be as tube rollable as the V2 because the V3 has the new protections built in that the V2 never had.

There are reports of people using the stock tubes and having issues too though. And others who have issues with some components (Lokius, different dacs, power strips, etc.) in the chain affecting the V3 and triggering the protection. It may not be a large, widespread issue, but there's a decent amount of smoke to assume there's a fire somewhere, figuratively speaking.

I have read this entire thread and most of the people who are having issues didn't actually say they are using the stock tubes.

With every release there will be the unfortunate 1% of people that get a dud unit, but hopefully they have reached out to Schiit. I have been very thorough with Schiit and given them every detail about my audio chain.
