Schiit Mjolnir 3 - Impressions Thread

That's great news.

Also based on @psy472 's impressions it sounds like a good pre-amp helps insure great sound from MJ3.
Jot2 + Mj3
Then I will be pre-amping the MJ3 with my Aune S17 to get the best of both worlds like my original plan was.

Yes!\
Im most likely getting the Mentor, but I do intend to pre-amp even that. With at least a Jot2. But Aune s17 or MJ3 would be better

MJ3 secondary uses. (not my pic) .. image_2024-02-25_221704450.png
Poor kitty, suffer 30th degree burns and possibly also radiation poisoning from being that close to this nuclear power plant of an amp.

Absolute degenerate!!!!!.... just like me.

Btw @Currawong did you try pre-amping the S17 to the MJ3 and vice-versa since you have both in your hands?, just as an experiment or out of curiosity?

100mA pre-amping LMAO!

Oh, yeah, I got it bad, Bro. Just look at my PC build and that says it all. :skull:

Ok hear me out.
I absolutely love my Mjolnir 3. I sold my Bliss after getting it. Also liked it more than the Bryston BHA-1.
With my DAC on the 6v setting the MJ3 pushes the Tungsten pretty good. I’m around 1-2 o’clock. But if you don’t have a DAC that’s pushing 6v or and option to change your DACs voltage, then it could be limited with things like the Tungsten and Susvara. Would be nice to have a tad bit more power.
So here’s what I’d love to see Schiit do. Heck, it could even be a limited run, I’ll buy one. Please give us a Mjolnir 3 design in a Ragnarok chassis with a bit more power. Maybe 3+ watts? With the Ragnarok chassis we could have the bigger heatsinks and additional inputs, even speaker taps. I know @Currawong wanted more inputs and I think it would be great too. Sure it’ll cost a bit more but this thing sounds amazing so let’s give it a bit more juice and features.
@Jason Stoddard
Give us Stormbreaker and kill the competition! Please!🙏
I’ll buy the first one, day one!

If you sold your Bliss after hearing the MJ3 it means it's damn good, like to good to be true.

Aye. Jason mentioned somewhere they had it working up to 8w (or something like that) but kept it locked down to 2w.
Maybe if they scaled up the topology of the MJ3 to something like a Ragnarok it could be done safely.

I reckon that there's absolutely no point in trying. It'd just result in a loss in SQ.

Can you explain this a little more?
I am new to pre-amping in general and it seems most report improved dynamics and various tonality changes when doing so.
What are we looking for in a good pre-amp pairing?

Thanks dude.

If you don't mind me asking, how loud do you listen to your music and what kind of music you listen too?, because I'm really hoping that my S17 is just enough for the Tungsten and I don't have to buy a freaking nuclear power plant to drive them properly.
I'm sorry, but I can't really provide a useful measurement here so feel free to ignore me. My rule of thumb is if I pause the music for 30secs and get jump scared resuming it then it's too loud. Tungsten gets that loud with most music around 3pm high gain on Mj3. Never taken it louder than that bc it's hurts my head. For especially low volume mixes like some movie soundtracks, or Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush. Those examples would benefit from something more powerful. I listen to nearly all modern music, different movie/game soundtracks, and 70's-80's rock. I rarely have to go past 1pm-3pm in high gain. Tbh completely maxed out on low gain is enough for me most the time. (On a 4V dac)

So i'm trying the Mest MK2 on the mj3 on the 6.3 input on low gain and It's freakin awesome!! It never stop to amaze me how well the Mest MK2 scales well with Better Gear! I Don't her any annoying humming some background noise floor but a Little bit only when there isn't any music but in combo with the merason the Mest has got even more bass and soundstage It's really good!

I can vouch for MJ3 as a pre-amp, so much better than the internal pre-amp in my Model 30. Not just improvement in dynamics, but gives notes a sweetness that invokes emotion. Like small plucks on guitar stings have feeling, playing the same track without the MJ3 and the magic is gone. Not subtle at all, it is a significant difference.
