Schiit Mjolnir 2 Listening Impressions

Lisst "tubes" are actually mosfets in a 9 pin noval package. The mosfets could certainly be going bad. Does it sound OK with real tubes in it?
The noise issue is with my new production Golden Lion tubes. When I put the LSSTs in the noise almost completely goes away.

I’ve been hosting the Dan Clark Audio Noire‑X for the past two weeks as part of the Watercooler Headphone Tour (review) and, wow, it’s made me fall for my Schiit Mjolnir 2 all over again. Swapping the new production Golden Lion 6922 tubes for Schiit’s LISST solid‑state “tubes” dialed in speed, razor‑sharp transients, and punchy macro‑dynamics that the Noire‑X absolutely thrives on. Tracks like Tidhar (The Paris Session) sound positively explosive; Warriors by Too Many Zoos has me grinning every time the bass hits. I finally have a resolving enough chain to make tube‑rolling differences painfully obvious—great for the tinkerer in me.

That exploration led me to reach out to Brent Jessee for advice on the least expensive NOS options that could combine the best traits of the LISST modules with some of the richness I still enjoy from tubes. Brent recommended a matched pair of Amperex (BEL-assembled) NOS E88CC tubes, and the initial impressions are exceptional. They deliver remarkable clarity, lively dynamics, and a beautifully holographic soundstage—striking a near-perfect balance between the analytical precision of the LISST and the engaging character of tubes.

This little rediscovery reminded me what a bargain the MJ2 is on the used market. Pair it with a modern planar—Noire‑X, Arya v3, you name it—and it still punches well above its weight. If your MJ2 has been gathering dust, give it another spin with a good planar and some fresh tubes/LISST modules. You might just fall in love again, too.
